VOL. 21 NO. 34 SEPTEMBER 7, 1978 25¢ PER COPY CONTRACT AWARDED FOR AIRPORT A $542,000 contract is being awarded to Stephen Zysko Construction company of .Thunder Bay for construction of a run -way and other facilities at the new Terrace Bay airport. Transportation and Communications minister James Snow said approval has been given to the Township of Terrace Bay to accept the Zysko bid which was the Towest of seven tenders re -ceived for the project. Terrace Bay is on the north shore of Lake Superior, 223 kilometres east of Thunder Bay. The new airport, which is just east of the community, is being built on the site of a privately owned airstrip which was taken over by the town- ship. Northern Affairs minister Leo Bernier said completion of the new airport will allow introduction of scheduled nor- Ontair service to Terrace Bay. The contract calls for construction of a 4,000-foot gravel runway taxiway, parking apron and runway lights. This work is to be finished later this year and the runway will be paved next summer. A separate construction project being carried out by the township and the Ministry of Transport and Communications involves a terminal building and installa- tion of navigational aids. The construction of the airport is being paid for jointly by the ministries of Northern Affairs and Transport and Com- munications and the township of Terrace Bay. "COUNCIL QUOTES The regular meeting of the Council of the Township of Terrace Bay was held on Monday, August 28th, at 7 p.m. Reeve Co Brassard, Councillors M, Hami1ton, P, Romanuk and K, Macleod Clerk-Co-ordinator W, Hanley and M, Simmer were in attendance. Minutes of the regular and special meetings were adopted as presented. The Arthritis Society was given permission to canvass the town in September. Council approved a resolution presented by the town of Tren= ton concerning vandalism, in an effort to encourage a reduction in the acts of vandalism which take place in municipalities. : 'Marg Simmer and Bill Hanley will attend an election seminar ° in Marathon on September 13, 1978. : The tender of Stephen Zysco Construction Ltd. for construc- tion of the municipal airport was accepted and contract docu- ments will be finalized. Beginning date will be around Sept. 5th, and completion is expected by November, 1978. Council authorized the signing of an application for the approval of a water works extension in the South Camp area. Rita Beckwith has been hired to act as crossing guard effec- |tive at school opening. Council has accepted with regret the resignation of Wayne | Baxter as Utility Person for the Public Works Department. The Debenture By-Law 226 will be paid off in full in the a- mount of approximately $35,363.25, subject to 0,M.B. approval. It will be paid from the existing special area reserve for sew- er purposes and from the water works surplus funds. A letter was received from Grant and Margaret Puttock, ex- pressing appreciation for the farewell dinner held in their honour by Council. Tenders submitted by Kar-Basher Ontario Ltd, (Jack Swan) for Derelict Motor Vehicle, Tender No. 1 in the amount of $23.00 per unit and Tender No. 2 in the amount of $3.00 per vehicle, have been accepted. Dave Desrosiers and Son have been hired to excavate a trench for the landfill site at a rate of $39.00 per hour. The work will begin as soon as the overburden is cleared.
