AMBLYOPIA: "The earlier amblyopia is detected in children, the better the chance of preventing needless loss of sight" says Mrs. Charlene Cameron, Co-ordinator of the Ontario Mobile Eye Care Unit. This Prevention of Blindness service to northern Ontario operated by The Canadian National Institute for the Blind will be in Terrace Bay from September 25th to September 29th. The Unit's visit is sponsored by The Kinsmen Clubs of Terrace Bay and Schreiber, "The most common cause of amblyopia," she says, "is stra- bismus (popularly known as turned or crossed eyes). It also develops from a substantial difference in the seeing ability of the two eyes. If left untreated, this condition can lead to a loss of sight which cannot be restored." "Treatment may include patching, glasses or in some cases surgery", Some tell-tale symptoms are frequent rubbing of the eyes, shutting or covering ome eye, bumping into objects on one side or an eye that isn't straight. Arrange for a complete eye examination cn the Mobile Eye Care Unit if you suspect that your child has either of these condi tions. An appointment with the ophthalmologist can be made by phoning 825-3834. Arthritis is a term describing about 100 different diseases.
