PAGE 6 TERRACE BAY NEWS JUNE 28, 1978 BOARD CONGRATULATED ON BUDGET The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Management of the District of Thunder Bay Home for the Aged was held on Fri day, June 16th,1978 at Birchwood Terrace, Terrace Bay, Ont- ario. The operating accounts totalling $144,203.04 for Pinewood Court and Birchwood Terrace were passed for May. The Board gave the authorization for up to three Board Members and six Staff Members to attend the Annual Ontario Association of Homes for the Aged Convention. This year the convention will be held in London on September 10th - 13th, 1978. The Board received an invitation from the Terrace Bay Mun- icipal Council to attend a social gathering on June 22nd at the Legion Hall for Seniors in their Area, This gathering is one of the many things going on in this Area during Senior Citizens! Week. The Board was informed that the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Ontario Nurses Association have been certi- fied as bargaining agents for the respective groups by the | Labour Relations Board & will be negotiating Agreements in the near future. Birchwood Terrace employees were not included. A letter from Mr. M.K. Kanski, A Senior Consultant with the Financial Department of the Ministry of Community and Soc- ial Services was read. Mr. Kanski made favourable comments on a recent Seminar on "Crunching the Budget" which was put on by Pinewood Court's Administration staff at the Regional Conference. Also, he congratulated the Home in the manner. in which the 1978 Budget was prepared and to the fact that the objectives set in December of last year were in fact being presently met. He also indicated that this is a credit to all staff working in beth Homes that the Board operates. A major concern was expressed by the Administrator, Mr. M. J. Vibert in regards to the number of people presently on the waiting list. [In the past during this time of the year the number of Residents waiting for accommodation is usually down. The major pressure seemingly is on the Pinewood Court Home which provides the two levels of Care, Residential and Extend- ed. However, even at Birchwood Terrace which has only Resi- dential Care the numbers are up from last year. Presently there are fifty of the sixty-two beds occupied and, last year there were only thirty-eight. From this information the Ad- ministrator was requested to prepare a report for the next meeting and, to indicate some plans that could be reviewed by the Board to help get around this issue. Capital Money for a two bed addition at Pinewood Court has received final approval and the Board was notified that the Architect's drawings are in the final stages and, will be ready for Tender soon. This addition will be a couple's suite lo- cated in the South Wing. Some alterations in the inside are required, but due to the increasing demand of this type of accommodation the move is well worth it. The area being con- verted is an unused bath area and storage room. On Saturday, June 17th, 1978 various Municipal Officials at- tending a meeting in Terrace Bay from the Thunder Bay District Municipal League, toured Birchwood Terrace.
