JUNE 7, 1978 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 7 Public 2) Announcement May 25, 1978 BROADCASTING SERVICES TO SMALL REMOTE COMMUNITIES The Commission, on May 18, 1978 issued a Public Notice calling for applications to bring service to the remote communities of Northern Ontario. The Commission will be available to answer any questions that communities may have and to assist them in olarify- ing some of the issues and requirements involved and in . preparing broadcasting licence applications. Inquiries in this respect should be addressed to the undersigned at CRTC, Ottawa, Ontario K1A ON2. The Commission will also work with communities, broad- casters, cable licensees, program producers, copyright holders and any other interested groups and individuals to find a viable means of extending licensed broadcasting service to Northern Ontario in the immediate future, ex- ploring such possibilities as: - Upgrading and extending the present over-the-air and cable service in smell communities by using such techniques as "breakouts" from end extentions to existing microwave routes; - Delivering Canadian program services vie satellite; and ~- Videotaped delayed rebroadcasting by low powered transmitters, by cable systems or by some combination of the two, The Commission will also seek the advice and co-operation of federal government departments, the CBC and represent- atives of the Government of Ontario to assist in the extension of service. In order to permit the responsible evolution and develop- ment of broadcast services, the Commission has decided to 18mit the call for applications to Northern Ontario for the present time, and will call for applications for other areas in the future. The Commission intends to hold a Public Hearing to consider applications received in response to the Public Notice at the Airlane Hotel, 698 West Arthur Street, Thunder Bay, Ontario. on October 17 and 18, 1978. Applications and comments should be received on or before August 1, 1978. Daniel was chosen by the college to receive the Survey T:chriician Faculty Award, which is a bursary and scholarship combined. Donor of the award was Joe Filipovic, chai man of the Construction Department at the college. Daniél is presently ployed with Kimberly-Clark of Canada Ltd. in Terrace Bay.
