A Vo © +1 CAUTION j IN CANOEING CLEAGUES Unless you are an experienced canoeist, it is hazardous to use a canoe in large lakes and rivers until late in June when the water becomes fairly warm. Why? Becuase you could be- come a victim of hypothermia which is the rapid loss of heat from the body's inner core. [If immersed in cold water through tipping or capsizing, an over-confident canoeist can lose con-_ sciousness within as little as ten minutes in 45degree F wat- er and drown. Already this spring, two canoeists in Ontario have become fatalities. The danger signals for canoeists are: sudden gusts of wind, unexpected rain squalls and poor weather in general. The sur est safety precaution when the weather turns bad is to head for the nearest shore and be prepared to land the canoe short notice. AT1 canoeists should know how to swim and float in the water. The ability to swim develops confidence but should not lead paddlers to overlook common=sense rules. Keep the centre of gravity low by kneeling on the bottom to padle. Distribute gear evenly over the centre portion of the canoe. Refrain from making sudden moves. Wear a lifejacket or P,F.N, (person -al flotation device) while on the water. ; The Ontario Safety League asks you to carefully consider your personal safety this season.
