A large number of ladies from all congregations gathered together in prayer, Church women in Canada send with this service a message to those across the world who pray together. "Our life in Canada is becoming a fuller and richer one as people of many cultures, many races, many creeds, and many tongues have come fiere to make their home. As Canadians we call our brothers and sis- ters around the world to 'share their lives with us and with one another so that all of humanity may grow into unity and wholeness through fellowship with one another. And in so doing we are doing God's will." The guest speaker was Mrs. P, Helmink, who gave a beautiful talk on the theme of the day, "Community Spirit in Modern Living". Lunch was served after the service in the Church Hall. The Citizens! Committee Studying Nuclear Waste has launched an educational program to inform area residents on. the happen- ings in the nuclear industry. "If the government won't provide us with the Hearings we've requested, we'll just have to take on the responsibility ourselves". stated chairperson Graham Saunders. To date, the Citizens! Contos, whose central office is in Thunder Bay, has collected over 9,000 signatures requesting local hearings throughout Northwestern Ontario. As well, their petition has been endorsed by the Thunder Bay City Council, the United Church Ministers of Northwestern Ontario and, the Shuniah Council, The District Labour Council and citizens in both Schreiber and Marathon have demanded that no nuclear waste be dumped at all in our area. On February 23, in the first of a two-part presentation at the Arthur Street Library, speaker Peter Lang told an audience, "As citizens, we have the right to know the facts concerning our Srey future"; *forthemare", he stated, Pas voters, we health and Safety", While examining the nuclear Industry, the Citi zens! 'Comnt ¢- tee is also studying possible alternatives to the nuclear gen- eration of electricity. At the secend presentation at the Arthur Street Library on March 2nd, local researcher Mr. Rich- ard Staples called for the clean-up and burning of area forest waste to produce electricity. He cited the example of Great Lakes Paper who power their entire mill operation by burning bark. Taking a swipe at Ontario Hydro, he stated, "Even green pop- Tar has more Btu's per pound that the soft coal that Ontario Hydro will be shipping here from the United States and Saskat- chewan", The Citizens! Committee plans further educationals at the other libraries, community centres and schools both in Thunder Bay and the outlying areas.
