PAGE 24 RE BAY NEWS DECEMBER 21, 2977 GUIDING NEWS A Guiders meeting was held at the Community Church with ten Leaders present. Minutes of the last meeting were read, followed by the Guide Prayer. It was decided that the Guides and Brown- ies will sing carols at Birchwood Terrace. The Guides will hold two nights for enrol- lment in December. These will be held at the Scout Hall. Meetings that some of Terrace Bay's lead- ers attended recently, were discussed. Cathy Geldreich, Ranger Leader attended a training at Doe Lake (near Toronto). Barb Wise, Mari- lyn Saranpaa, Geraldine Belliveau and Diane Coupal attended the Area Annual Meeting in Dryden in November and reported on this. Thinking Day plans are underway for Feb. 19th, 1978. Diane Coupal will convene this event to be held at the Community Church. The Rangers and Cadet Isle Smith held their chocolate almond blitz on Wednesday, November 14th. The Girl Guides Halloween Candy sales and regal catalogue sales were an overwhelming success and their travel fund is now well on it's own. Ranger Tracey Stachiw is now working with Pack 2 Brownies along with Barb Wise and Isle . Smith. The Winter Carnival float was difcusseq and ideas presented to all the Leaders. The Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion, Terrace Bay have presented a cheque for $100. to the Guiding movement. This will be split four ways so each unit will receive $25.00 for working expenses. The meeting adjourned and Guiding fleurs were distributed by Madame Commissioner Marilyn Saranpaa. On Tuesday, December 6th, five Guides were enrolled. These were Lisa Fournier, Sheelah Houston, Jennifer Kodila, Martha London and Lauri Stachiw. Many mothers and fathers at- tended the candle-light ceremony. A quiet campfire was held at the close of the evening. Marilyn Saranpaa thanked everyone for attend- ing. VERSATILE PATRON SAINT In addition to doing yeo- man's work at Christmas, St. Nicholas is charged the year round with being the patron saint of pawnbrok- ers, bankers, sailors, maid- ens and schoolboys! CATHOLIC WOMEN 's LEAGUE MEETING A special vat service was held prior to the regular meeting of the Catholic Women's A League, Terrace Bay, on December 6, 1977. A resume of the meaning of Advent was given + by Mrs. Haas and readings were by Mrs. Ramsay and Mrs. Dashkewytch. 'The ladies joined in the singing of the hymns "O Come Emmanuel" "O Come Divine Messiah" and "How Great Thou Art". The president, Mrs. L. Belliveau opened the meeting with the League prayer and prayer for the Holy Father. After the reading of the minutes, corres- pondence was read by C. Roen and the treasur- er's report by K. Mikkinen. Conveners reports were then read: P. Regis asked that if anyone hears about anyone ill or in the hospital to let her know. B. Pytyck read her report on the Penny -- Auction and thanked all the ladies who helped make it a success. C. Haas said the rosary had been said dur- ing the month of October after masses. The rosary was recited at the church for Mr. Jaremy, and the ladies assisted in pro- viding a meal for the family. It was decided that a donation received for services would be given to the choir to purchase new hymn books. Mrs. L. Belliveau laid the wreath at the Cenotaph. on November llth. - The 25 year Anniversary supper was a tre- moundous success. Twenty-five year pins have now been received and some were distributed after the meeting. Any members who were ab- sent will be contacted at a later date. J A short resume of the C.W.L. Diocesan meet -ing held in St. Agnes Church, Thunder Bay on November 24th was given. The theme of the Convention to be held in Thunder Bay in St. Patrick's Parish on May 9, 10 and 11 will be The Family, Church of the Home. The ladies will be buying flowers to put on the altar at Christmas. Motions were made to give gifts to our director and our mission priest, as well as to purchase a gift of a toaster for the Senior Citizens. : Mrs. A. Chepelsky has been giving out baby cards and medals for the League, and has gra- ciously consented to continue doing so. 7 It was suggested it would be a good idea to ° hold a mini-bazaar as some fund raising event about the end of January, in order to help out the ladies attending the convention. A dis- cussion on the subject took place and will be brought up at the next meeting. To page 28..
