HIGHLIGHTS SCHREIBER TOWN COUNCIL MEETINGS The Township Courcil awarded a $128,495.00 contract to Stephen Zysko Construction of Thun- der Bay for the installation of storm sewers on "Huron, Brunswick, Erie and Alberta Streets, subject to Ministry of Transportation & Commun- ications approval. \ A representative of the Ministry of Housing recently visited Schreiber and presented pre- liminary sketches for the design.of a 23 unit Senior Citizens complex. It is expected that the Construction will begin next spring. Arrangements are to be made with the Schrei- ber Branch of the Canadian Legion for the place -ment of the Schreiber Cenotaph on Legion pro- perty. All other existing structures on the Senior Citizens property will have to be moved. On the recommendation of the Schreiber Parks and Recreation Committee, Mr. N. Norris, former ~ly of Geraldton, was hired as Recreation Dir- ector for the Township of Schreiber at a sal- ary of $17,500.00. Mr. Norris will commence his duties early in October. The Ministry of the Environment has advised that tenders for the construction of a new chlorine plant and water and sewer lines on Peary Street will be called as soon as possible Top priority will be given to the construction of a new chlorine plant. These projects are to be funded from a $116,000.00 grant received from the Ministry of Northern Affairs. M.M. Dillon Ltd., Consulting Engineers, have commenced work on the specification stage for the new arena. There will be on-going meetings with the Recreation Committee until a final design is arrived at. Council decided to rebid the sale of the Alcorn property on Scotia Street, with Council reserving a bid of $3,000.00 for the property. Council directed that the clock formerly located in the old Post Office, now the Medical Building, be repaired and re-installed. A new controller and face will be required. The Ministry of the Environment has advised that although the condition of the water supply has improved considerably, it will be necessary! to maintain the boil water order on the system until the new chlorine plant is in- operation. ' Grants. from Wintario and the Community Cen- tres Act in the amount of $23,325.00 has been received to help defray the cost of arena re- pairs. Legal details have been completed in connec- tion with the purchase of land on Langworthy Street, which Bell Canada has agreed to an ex- change of property, which will allow the Town- ship to relocate the road and build an Arena on the site. WOMEN'S INSTITUTE SEPTEMBER MEETING "Mrs. Anne Todesco, CHE ians at the Sept- ember meeting of the Schreiber Women's Instit-_ ute, welcomed back the members, who, for 'the roll call described their summer vacations, showing souvenirs of places they had been. Motto for the meeting was "Wisdom is to know what is Best". F In the lively discussion on current events, members discussed the damage and train derail- ments, -caused by recent heavy rains; the prow-:~- ling bears within Rossport and Schreiber due wD to the shortage of berries and the laser beam and it's great contribution to healing by both *- medical means and surgery. 7 # Mrs. Todesco thanked the secretary, Mrs. Wesley Clemens for the completion of the new «- program books which have been distributed to the members. Margaret Spillane gave the financial report : 7 and Annie Niemi reported sending many cards for E various occasions during the summer. | Letters of appreciation were received from + -- Mrs. Edith Reid,' New Westminster, B.C.; Mrs. Nettie Thrower; Edith Arnold of Wiarton and Lake Superior Board of Education for the scho- larship presented to Gene Hartman by Mrs. Joe Campbell. ' On July 21st, several people went to Thundes- Bay and enjoyed taking part in various events --- a cruise on the Welcome ship; tour of old Fort William; a visit to Kakabecka Falls. A supper and entertainment evening in the Air- lane Motor Hotel followed the events of the day. h Xo Mesdames Anne Todesco, Annie Niemi, Winnie Clemens, Eirene Harness and Mavis Slater were on the committee who welcomed Mrs. Lindsay Hackett Pain, of Sussex, England, treasurer of the Associated Country of Women of the World and Mrs. Verna Maluske, president. of the F.W. I.0.: Mrs. Todesco reported on the directors meet | -ing in Thunder Bay and described travel ar- rangements to the area convention in Rainy River. Mrs. Frances Pajimaki, president of North Thunder Bay District will attend the =' - October meeting of the Schreiber Branch. A cold supper was planned for the event. A soc- ial hour followed the meeting. SOCIAL: Mr. and Mrs. Joe Del Guidice, of Timmons and Mr. and Mrs. Norman Fox of North Cobalt are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pinion - the visitors being relatives of Mr. Pinion. Mrs. Dolly Guild and Miss Heather Guild of Sault Ste. Marie visited Mr. and Mrs. Norman Bottomley last week. Mrs. Guild is Mr. Bottom -ley's sister.
