Now required in new homes under the Ontario Building Code, smoke detectors have recently become a "hot" topic among consumers. There are two types of smoke detectors. Ionization detectors sense products of com- bustion often before there are visible signs of fire. Photoelectric-type detectors are J triggered when smoke impedes a beam of dight in the unit. Both units respond much more quickly than the heat-acti- vated units used in commercial and in- dustrial buildings. Prices range from $40 to $80 for the units which may be battery-operated, plug-in, or connect -ed to the house wiring. For further in- formation on this subject or any other government informa- tion contact the Northern Affairs of- fice located Lower Floor, Peninsula Building, Gilbert Street, Marathon.
