This year the Thunder Bay Horticultural Society will host a District Annual Meeting on May 15th at the Exhibition Grounds. All are welcome to attend. Our Spring Meeting will be held Wednesday, April 27th in: the large meeting room of the Recreation Centre. More details later. FIRE SEASON 1976 by: D.E. Grainger Senior Fire Control Technician The 1976 forest fire season was one of the worst in Ontario's recorded history. From April 1 to October 31, 1976 Ontario experienced 3,986 forest fires that burned 1,328,000 acres. During that period the Terrace Bay District recorded fifty-six forest fires, which is much higher than the Fortunately, last year the acreage burned in this District was kept very low (93 acres) thanks to a measure of good luck and quick efficient suppression action by our unit fire crews and woods' in- dustry crews. Thirty-seven of these fifty- six fires were caused by lightning and the remaining nineteen were man-caused. We would like to thank the members of the public who helped us in many ways last summex. The outlook for the coming season is such that we likely will need your assistance even more than during the previous seasons. GUIDING NEWS: After many weeks of planning and prepara- tion by the Guides and Brownies, a float was assembled with the help of the Rangers and Leaders. The theme of the float this year was "Voyageur Land" with an Indian princess - Kim Korzinski and a Voyageur - Heather Saran- paa, amid a tee-pee, beaver pelts, snow shoes and trappers trophies of nature. Mr. Weatherman was not very cooperative this year. The day the parade was due to move out, rain and fog held fast, and only ome or two vehicles ventured around the town, making a brave showing. The Ranger chosen as Princess to represent the Guides and Rangers for the Winter Carnival Queen contest was Tracey Stachiw. Tracey took first place and was the Terrace Bay Winter Carnival 'Queen. She attended as many indoor activities as was possiblie during her week- end reign. . To page 8 .....
