PAGE 18 TERRACE BAY NEWS MARCH 2, 1977 SMITHEMAN : The funeral of the late Mrs. John Smitheman nee Ethel Cameron, whose death occurred on February 19, 1977 was conducted in St. : Andrew's United Church on February 22nd by Rev. Brian Bigelow, with the ladies' choir taking part. \ The honourary pallbearers were Bernard Paradis, Austin Cosgrove, Walter Ilijow, Russell Macadam, Walter Murphy and Denis Neylon. ; Active bearers were Walter Ballard, Martin Ryan, Cyril Pike, Borden Ross, D'Arcy Wilson and William D'Arcy. : Interment was in Schreiber cemetery. - Mrs. Smitheman, who was 85 years old, was born in Spanish Mills, and came to Schreiber in 1921 following her marriage to Mr. Smithe- man in Massey, Ontario. Her immediate survivor is a son, John, of Schreiber and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband in 1948. Prior to the Church Service, Ruby Rebekah Lodge #279, of which Mrs. Smitheman had been a member since 1925, held their funeral rite in the King Funeral Home. 'Mrs. Smitheman had played the organ in the United Church, and later sung in the choir. . She had belonged to the Church's Women's Missionary Society, and was an Honourary Mem- ber of the United Church Women, a member of the Chimo Club and of the Schreiber Art Club. For many years Mrs. Smitheman taught piano, at times being the only teacher in town. Her reputation grew each year as her students made excellent marks in tests given by examiners from eastern Ontario. Several of her students went on to complete their education in music. Among those attending the funeral from other places were: Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm, Parkhill, Ontario; Mr. William Darby, Dubre- ville, Ontario; Mrs. Annie Cameron, Thunder. Bay; Miss Heather Brown, London, Ontario; irs. Charles Todesco, Rossport; Mrs. Bill Weaver and Mrs. Jody Davis, Terrace Bay and Mrs. Robert Bagdon, White River. - ' W. GLAD HONOURED ON 90TH BIRTHDAY William (Bill) Glad was Forcered on his 90th birthday at a dinner party in his son Earl's home on February 19, 1977. Mr. Glad is believed to be the oldest re- .sident of Schreiber and still lives alone in his home, but he has his two sons, Earl and : Melvin and ten grandchildren in Schreiber who visit him regularly. z A special message from his grandaughter, Caroline, Mrs. D.G. His nephew, Arnold Glad and his wife, of Thunder Bay, attended the event. » SCHREIBER SWEETHEART BONSPIEL | The Sweetheart Bonspiel, an annual February event of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 109 Schreiber was again a success, although . fewer rinks were entered due to the over load- ed social calendar in the town. i! A gala crowd attended the smorgasbord sup- i 3 per after the curling. A dance followed in : the Legion Hall. Prizes went to: First Event - Fred McColeman 1 = + (skip) , Lorraine Huard, Bill Madge and Shirley Hamilton; Second Rink - Ruth Hiller, Billie d Ann Saarinen, Jody Davis, Dave Hamilton; ob Third - Bena Welbourne rink; Fourth - Barry Harper rink; Second Event - Don Tremblay, Len Hiller, Ruth Collinson and Helen LeBlanc; Ba Bryson, Geraldine McColeman; Third - Dom. Re Carmesin rink; Fourth - Russ Saarinen rink. Among those attending the event from out of town were Mrs. Bill Lidkea and Mrs. Jim oF Gray of Thunder Bay. : GUESTS ATTEND CHIMO CLUB MEETING | Miss-Kaye Haggen and Miss Nicote Berrault, | of Social Service Thunder Bay, were welcomed £ by Mrs. Helen Wallace, president, to the re- gular February meeting of the Chimo Club x (Rossport, Schreiber and Terrace Bay). in the club room in Schreiber. Gordon Creighton and Steve Pronych oF Mar- athon were also welcomed as guests, represent- " ing their town's senior citizéns club. Miss Haggen and Miss Berrault discussed with mem- bers the possibility of securing volunteers in service, explaining how this is arranged but no decision was made. A group trip to Niagara is being sorsiaeren] with further information expected. Mrs. Ida Krause will plan a bingo for the Club.
