DECEMBER 23, 1975 TERRACE BAY NEWS BAGE 29 / "to above by Pam Jones Jim Chappel, Fish and Wildlife Supervisor of the 'Terrace Bay Ministry of Natural Resources, holding up Indian mitts and slippers Have you ever wondered what happens to the moose hides that hunters give in to the Natural Resources Office? 5 Jim Chappel was most helpful with his information ori this subject. Last year the Terrace Department ship- ped eighty hides out. The Province expects an approx- imate 5,000 to be done this year. First, they are salted ere in Terrace Bay and this year they were shipped out to a tannery in Barrie. From the tannery the Depart- ment of Indian Affairs sends them to the Indian Reserves up north. Most of these reserves can only be reach- ed by plane. Reserves that receive these hides are: Fort Hope, Webeque, Ogoki antl Winisk. The Indian people make the most beautiful mitts, slippers and mocassins with them. What they sell is their own profit for the Band. : . You can see two of these items in the Credit Union window - courtesy of Jim and Betty Chappel.
