For the first time funding will be avail- able for the improvement and maintenance of cross country ski trails, The funds provided will be almost totally allocated to trail grooming and improvements, rather than the purchase of equipment which was funded last year. i Mr. Bernier emphasized that this winter's trail grooming and maintenance program is an' interim measure designed to offer immediate assistance in the upgrading of snowmobiles and cross country ski trails, pending longer term recommendations from the Ontario Trails Council. This 17 member advisory group was appointed recently to advise the Minister on the future planning and development of the Province's recreational trails program. Last year the ground work was laid in the Terrace Bay District for the maintenance of a number of snowmobile trails along the North Shore and in the Manitouwadge area. We fore- see no problems in continuing this program. However, the ski trail program is a new ven- "ture and in order to do the best job possible with the funds available, we require some in- put from cross country skiers in the District. We intend to set up a few informal meetings of cross country skiers to help determine our course of action this winter. If you have any questions or suggestions concerning the winter trail program, please do not hisitate to call our Lands and Parks Supervisor in the Terrace Bay District Office.
