The toast to the auxiliary was given by Jim Crook, president of the Branch. Reeve McParland spoke of the satisfaction of the town council in having the new dam (water supply for the town) completed, the se- wage system almost completed and the streets re-paved. He urged ratepayers to make their complaints and dissatisfactions known to cou- ' ncil and, he added, a few plaudits would be welcomed on occasion. Jim Crook paid tribute to the auxiliary for its unfailing support of the Branch and accepted a cheque of $2.000.00 from Jean Crook president of the auxiliary. ; Mr. Crook welcomed Mrs. Etta Gray of Thund- er Bay, long-time member of the Legion auxil- iary and Mr. and Mrs. Victor McKay, newcomers to Schreiber. He then presented plaques in- scribed with their names and war service, - bearing the commendation of the Queen and the Canadian Legion to Harry Smith and Tommy Whit ton, veterans of the First World War. Mr. Crook made an urgent appeal to Branch members to keep their association alive, say- ing they have a debt to veterans, 10 of the first world war still being members. e must repay, Mr. Crook said, "they died to protect the rights of the usually small communities from where they enlisted and we must continue these interests." Mr. Saya gave a most interesting address on the work of the Association for the Mentally Retarded, stressing love as the keynote in all their enterprises. The evening ended with a cabaret dance. CATHOLIC WOMEN'S LEAGUE MEETING: Mrs. Lorette McParland presided for the Catholic Women's.League regular meeting on November 9, with Sister Marvel reading the Scripture passage. J Mrs. Irene Borutski read a detailed report from Mrs. Penny Caccamo, convenor of the arr- angements made for the Christmas tea-bazaar on November 14. Mrs. Borutski also said the date for the annual Parish social has been set for February 27. Mrs. Elizabeth Perrault accepted the con- venership of the Christian Family Life prog- ram. It was decided to give a sum of money to Birchwood Terrace to be spent as the adminis- tration decided for Christmas. The C.W.L. Christmas party will be held on December 14, featuring a penny auction. Inspector, Jim Crook, of the CP Rail Force, was the guest speaker. Safety was his topic. Mr. Crook dwelt at length on the hazardous practice of students of both grade school and high school crossing the railway, rather than using the subway. He urged parents to dis- cuss this habit with their families and em- phasize the danger involved in using the tracks as a short.cut. Sister Marvel thanked Mr. Crook and presen- ted him with a gift. WOMEN'S INSTITUTE : The Schreiber Women's Institute held their November meeting with Mrs. Anne Todesco pre- siding. In deference to Remembrance Day mem- bers sang the national anthem and obserbed a two minute silence. Mrs. Winnie Clemens read an article on the first peace flower, the poppy. The roll call was answered by recollections of former winter customs and chores involved in housekeeping then. In current affairs members discussed the sinking of the American oil carrier in Lake Superior on November 10, the postal strike and the paving of the town streets. Motto for the meeting was "The community can rise higher than its citizens". Minutes of the last meeting were adopted as read, with thank you notes received from Mrs. Robert Winters, Mrs. Tom Whitton and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Fummerton. Two cash donations: were received. Mrs. Annie Niemi volunteered to replace Mrs. Chris Morris as card convener. Mrs. Todesco reported on the District Rally thanking the members for the opportunity of representing them. She also presented her his- tory report, "Our Heritage". A visit to Birchwood Terrace Home was plan=- ned for December first when twe life members, Mrs. Agnes Bryson and Mrs. Jessie Macadam will be honoured. It is hoped all members will at- tend this occasion, meeting at the Town Hall at 1:45 p.m. for transportation.
