BELL CANADA PAY PHONES Space-age Technology has caught up with Bell Canada pay phones. The phones will make their appearance starting November 17th when Bell replaces its more than 500 public phones in Northwestern Ontario. It is expected that by December 15, 1975 most of the phones will be the Centurion type. - The new sets from a customer's point of view are larger, and have a single coin slot instead of three on existing phones. This significant design change is the first in over a quarter cenury for pay phones. Following the trend to electronic switching Lunch Comm- callers' ear in these new phones. Named the Centurion because of its rugged 3 construction and design qualities, the set | has interchangeable components making it eas- ier and more economical to service than the | bresent phone used by Bell. In addition to installation of. the new pho-. nes, wiring modifications are being made in switching centres in order to provide a new service at all outdoor phones. The added ser- vice will enable callers to reach the Opera~- tor, Directory Assistance and Repair Service without depositing a coin. At the same time, there will be a change of 3 rate to 20 cents for local calls from many of the public pay phones. The increase is the first since 1952, and will not apply to pub- lic telephones located in railway stations, bus terminals, nursing homes, rooming houses, churches or at sidewalks. An instructional card at each phone will clearly indicate whe- ther the cost is 10 or 20 cents, and if emer- gency calling without a coin is available. Bell's public telephone replacement and service improvement started in Toronto in 1974. With the installation in Northwestern Ontario the $14 million Program will be com- pleted.
