PAGE 6 TERRACE BAY NEWS APRIL 23,11975 Minimum Wage - continued 28 hours per week during the school year. Recently the Federal Govt. announced an in- crease in the federal minimum wage to $2.60 per hour. This caused some concern and confus -ion. The federal govt. exercises it's author -ity over federal employees and those employ- ers whose business overlaps from province to province. These include interprovincial trans -portation, employees who operate boats or ships, bank employees, etc. This affects about I9,000 employees. Regular working hours in general industry are eight hours in a day and 48 in a week. Where an employee works more than 44 hours in a week the employee must be paid one and one- half times his regular rate of pay for each hour worked after 44 hours in a week. Employees are entitled to seven public holidays with pay: New Year's Day, Good Friday Victoria Day, Dominion Day, Labour Day, Thanks -giving Day and Christmas Day. Public holi- day benefits apply to full time, part time and student employees. If a qualified employee does not have a substitute arrangement and works on a public holiday, the employee must be paid at least time and one-half the regul- ar rate for those hours worked plus their regular days pay for that public holiday. If you have questions regarding this or any other subject call Northern Affairs at 229-II53 or visit the office at the Peninsula Building, Marathon, Ontario.
