PAGE I4 TERRACE BAY NEWS OCTOBER 23, I974 UCW WELCOMES MEDICAL SOCIAL WORKER Mrs. Beth Macadam presided for the regular October meeting of the United Church Women, reading a poem concerning Thanksgiving, the theme of this meeting and Mrs. Wesley Clemens took charge of the devotion period. Church calendars for the year were placed on order, these calendars used by both the United Church and the Anglican Church - Mrs. Norma Fummerton convenes this project. It was agreed to present a bid to serve the Legion banquet on November llth. Mrs. Macadam reported on the success of the Retreat held at Loon Lake, conducted by the Rev. Bob Stivens of Current River United Chur- ch, a most eloquent speaker. She thanked Mrs. John Morris who had driven the group to Loon Lake. "The report on the recent Fall Fair, given by Mrs. Nettie Thrower, treasurer, showed it to be a successful event. A lengthy letter dealt with the proposed celebrating of the Church's 50th anniversary by setting up a fund, which will be used to aid others ~ children, youth, education in leadership and training. It was agreed to cater for the U.T.U. ban- quet on October I8th and the menu planned. Mesdames David Nesbitt, Earl Holmes and Nelson Smith were named as November lunch hos- tesses. Mrs. Betty Usher of Terrace Bay was welcom- ed and introduced by Mrs. Macadam as the guest speaker. Mrs. Usher, for several years, a Medical Social Worker in Thunder Bay, gave a most interesting address, and in an obviously successful innovation, invited her audience to interrupt, when a point occurred to them, requiring further explanation. In token of their appreciation the members presented Mrs. Usher with a souvenier cake plate. Mrs. Usher and Mrs. Macadam are pictured below. CWL PLAN CHRISTMAS BAZAAR Mrs. Penny Caccamo, at the meeting of the Catholic Women's League, on October I3th, re- ported plans for their Christmas bazaar are complete, with the event to be held on Novem- ber lé6th in the town hall. Due to rising food costs, the price for the tea was increased. Mrs. Margaret Weaver and Mrs. Liz Prescott have generously donated the two cakes which will be raffled. The League has purchased a cardiograph machine to be used in the medical centre in town. It was decided no further catering will be done by the League for banquets, wedding dinn- ers, etc. A wreath was ordered to be placed at the Cenotaph on November llth. Mrs. Harold McParland, reported on the town council meeting, stating a housing policy will be set up for the new sub-division, and, the CP Rail had donated $50,000 toward the building of a new dam for the town. Mrs. Lucette Chicoine presided for the meeting. ANTHONY SPEZIALE - VICE PRINCIPAL Anthony Speziale is Vice-Principal of the Lake Superior Public School, Schrei -ber Campus, this year. Mr. Speziale re- ceived his elementary and high school edu- cation in Schreiber, his B.A. Degree from Lakehead University, : -- and his teaching training from Lakehead Teachers' College. He was formerly vice principal of Holy Angels Separate School in Schreiber, he re- ceived his principal's (interim) certificate this summer, and plans to continue his studies He shares, with Mrs. Ruth Mulligan, the honour of achieving the difficult feat of gaining recognition in oné's home town =~ Mrs. Mulligan being principal of Lake Superior High School. Mr. Speziale and his wife, the former Beulah Grover, have four children. Schreiber is proud of its many 'children' who have become successful teachers, and be- lieves it has an unique distinction of having schools with two campuses in different towns. 4
