Vol. I7: No. 17 May I, I974 20¢ Per Copy MOBILE EYE CARE UNIT TO VISIT AREA by Bev Young, Northern Affairs Officer The Ontario Mobile Eye Care Unit, an ophth- almologist's office on wheels, is designed to conduct medical eye examinations and to test for eye diseases. Minor surgery can be per- formed on an emergency basis. The Unit's pro- gram is geared to educate the public to the importance of eye care and the possible symp- toms of eye disease. The co-operation of local physicians and public health nurses is essential so that tho- se persons suffering ocular discomfort or disease can be helped. Anyone who needs foll- ow-up is referred by letter to the family doc- tor. About I25 persons .are seen weekly for com- plete eye examinations. Based on statistics, 73.5% of these people have problems relating to some abnormality of the eye. Little is known of the causes of most eye 'diseases which lead to blindness but modern medical technology has learned much about how their damage can be halted. Early detection of vision defects by the van staff will pre- vent many people in the rural areas of Ontario from having permanent eye damage. The Mobile Van will be in: Manitouwadge June 3 - 7; Marathon and Terrace Bay - June I0 - 14. Times and places will be announced later. Several publications on eye care and disease are available through any CNIB District Office For further information write to: Northern Affairs, Peninsula Bldg., P.O. Box 280, Mara- thon, Ont. or phone 229-II53.
