Los Angeles and Atlanta had the inside track for those two spot, but St. Louis and Minnesota weren't yet out of*the running. So, instead of making a fool of myself and making some silly prognostications about the up-coming playoffs, I'll pass and wait until next week to do my annual forecasting. Actually, I have a notebook-full of little goodies that I'd like to get rid of anyway, and unless I do that today, most of them will be outdated: ? A National Basketball Association franchise is worth $6.I5 million. And Harold Ballard, president of Maple Leaf Gardens, is prepared to raise the money to get an NBA franchise in Toronto. The Gardens has been host for I0 or I2 Buffalo Braves NBA games this season and the response has been tremendous. Paul Snyder president of the Braves, is pleased with the way the Gardens has been handling the game and will be a Ballard booster when the NBA votes on whether Toronto should get a franchise. Three other Toronto groups are apparently in- terested in acquiring the franchise when it comes - possibly in I975-76 - but it appears Ballard has the inside track. He turned them down for a baseball pitching career. But now Vida is contemplating giving up baseball for a football career. Vida says he would like to play quarterback in the new World Foot -ball League. Blue, who has signed a $70,000 contract to pitch with the World Series champ- ion Athletics this year, says he's waiting to - see if the WFL will actually get off the ground before he makes up his mind. "Even if I had a good year in Oakland, it would be a hard decision whether I would play baseball again," he said. "I've always loved football and I sort of think I could help a new team." He says he's not "trying to start a war be- tween the two professions ... but in my own mind I'd consider both offers. It's good for anybody to have that option..." Claude Larose, who, after being out most of the season, came back to Montreal Canadiens lineup like a scoring king - IO goals in four games - was knocked out of competition (probably for the rest of the season) in his fifth game against Pittsburgh Penguins.
