TERRACE BAY NEWS Vol. Ié No. 48 December 5, 1973 I5 ¢ Per Copy TERRACE BAY COUNCIL QUOTES The November 27th meeting of Township Coun- cil opened with Reeve Roy Bray and Councillors Helmink and Megraw present. The minutes of the last meeting were adopt- ed with business arising dealing with Christ- mas decorations. Council has decided not to hold the annual sparkle contest and the street decoration lights will be lit for the three days of Christmas only. Other business arising was the date of November 28th being set for a meeting with Pine -wood Court. ; Minutes of the special meeting held in-cam- era after the last Council meeting were also passed. Police Chief Dave Barnett was present to submit his October report and outlined the seventy-two complaints investigated during the month. A partial report from the President of the Ontario Motor League, Northwestern Ontario Club was submitted. This section dealt with spec- ial tribute that was paid to almost 600 school safety patrol students through presentations of Award Certificates and Lapel Pins. Atikokan and Dryden were prize winning communities in the Annual Pedestrian Safety Campaign. A letter from Gwell Investments Limited with regards to the towers at the Red Dog Inn advised Council these would be burned to the ground level. St. John Ambulance wrote asking Council for financial support. A motion was passed to don- ate $25.00. A letter from Ontario Hydro giving Council option on House 249 Kenogami Road until Decemb- er 10th, before public bids were called for. continued page 2 SEPARATE SCHOOL TEACHERS SUBMIT RESIGNATIONS Due to the recent word that the separate school teachers of Terrace Bay and Schreiber have submitted their resignations effective | December 3I, I973, the Terrace Bay News Office contacted Mr. Mike Anderson, Principal of St. Martin School and Mr. George Ramsay, Chairman of the School Board. Both these gentlemen stated they had releas- es available which are as follows: A STATEMENT FROM THE ONTARIO ENGLISH CATHOLIC TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION All teachers employed by the Schreiber- Terrace Bay District Roman Catholic Separate School Board tendered their resignations last Friday, November 30th. This unanimous action was taken to back the teachers' wage demands. The teachers have been unable to reach a sat- isfactory salary agreement with the Board for the I973-74 school year, and have been working since this September without a new contract. The resignations become effective on Decem- ber 3Ist, and -- unless a new agreement can be reached before that date -- the schools will not be able to open for classes after the Christmas holidays, on January 3rd, I974. This would affect the two schools under the local Board: St. Martin School in Terrace Bay and Holy Angels School in Schreiber. Susan McIlveen, provincial negotiator from the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' -Associa- tion (OECTA), expressed concern over the Board's unwillingness to meet. She stated that Yvan Beauparlant, negotiator for the Board, had received a telegram from OECTA on November I9th : continued page 8
