Morriseau Although the I3I unit fire crews of Ontario have already breathed a sigh of relief, the Fire Season will not be officially over for another two weeks. The Fire Season in the Prov --ince of Ontario is that period from the Ist day of April to the 3Ist day of October of each year. The work load on fires during this season was very minimal for the three crews within the Terrace Bay District. In all, eighteen fires were detected and re- ported. All of these fires were reported by the public. Initial action was taken by Min- istry of Natural Resources personnel on ten fires. Organized Municipalities took action on three fires. Canadian Pacific Railway employ- ees took action on two and Indian Reserve vol- unteers and the Sisters of St. Joseph, Schrei- ber took action on one each. No action was taken on one fire. The latter occurred during the night in early April. This fire consumed ten acres of grass and died a natural death. With the exception of two fires, no control problems were initially experienced. One was "slash" fire north of Manitouwadge which was finally contained at five acres with prompt ac- tion by MNR unit crews working in conjunction with water bombing aircraft. The other fire was located at Mileage I06, C.P.R., east of Terrace Bay. Fortunately this blaze burned it- self out at the edge of a little lake. The Terrace Bay District also carried ojit a prescribed burn operation on the American Can Limits, twenty-five miles northwest of Manitou- _wadge. This was a joint effort between the Geraldton and Terrace Bay Districts with I,I2I acres being burned within a I,500 acre cutover. The following is a comparison of fire occur- HH» © 14 14 7 rences, cause, discovery agency, area burned (Private or Crown), and costs for the fire season of I972 and I973. The comparison does not show any significant difference due to the very light fire season and favourable weather (fire wise). However, the new Terrace Bay District encompasses a much larg- er area than the former Terrace Bay Chief Ranger Division. As such, we can expect a heavier fire workload in years to come.
