PAGE 4 TERRACE BAY NEWS AUGUST 29, 1973 Sports Slants - continued ceeeene Western Canada League last year, scoring 67 goals and finishing with I47 points. The whole mess about signing junior-aged players started over a month ago when Houston . Aeros got Marty and Mark Howe in a package deal with their great father, Gordie. The WHA claimed that there was nothing to stop them from signing the two young Howes, since, under U.S. amateur rules, a player cannot be paid more than $40 a week to retain his amateur status. The two Howes were making $60 a week each with the Marlies, and, according to the Aeros (and the WHA) were regarded as profess- ionals. The NHL expected the junior raiding by the WHA would stop there, but obviously it hasn't. ! Clarence Campbell must be so mad, these days, he's probably biting his forehead. Watch for some wild battles between the WHA, the NHL and the CAHA in the near future ..... SPORTS SHORTS: Leonard (Red) Kelly signed up to coach Toronto Maple Leafs last week (was there ever any doubt?) and promptly assured Toronto fans that the Leafs would be no worse than second in the NHL's east division for the I973-74 season. Actually, while I've nev- er been a Leaf fan, I have to admit the Hog City squad might be just that good. After all the Leafs will have some of the best netmind- ing in the league with Doug Favell, Ed Johns- ton, Ron Low and Dunc Wilson all vying for the job between the posts. Also, he has some top talent in fellows like Darryl Sittler, Jim McKenny, Rick Kehoe and Ron Ellis. If Dave Keon can have another one of his superb seas- ons and Paul Henderson snaps back from last year's injuries, you can be sure the Leafs will be contenders. Kelly has admitted that Montreal Canadiens may be the only team with more talent, and being a Canadiens fan, I have to agree with him. Boston Bruins, New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres will fight it out for third and fourth sports and) like last year, Detroit, Vancouver and New York Islanders will miss the playoffs ...... Red Kelly, by the way, is the IIth coach to handle the Leafs since Toronto joined the' NHL in. I927. Others have been Conn Smythe, A Art Duncan, Dick Irvin, Hap Day, Joe Primeau, King Clancy, Howie Meeker, Billy Reay, Punch Imlach and John McLellan ...... Muhammad Ali days he may have boxing if he loses his September with Ken Norton ....... Veteran Saskatchewan Roughriders fullback George Reed eclipsed a record which once be- longed to the great Cleveland Brown running to quit I0th rematch back, Jimmy Brown (not a red-hot movie star), a week or so ago, in a game against B.C. Lions. He scored a touchdown, giving him 107 rushing. Brown had I06. Then last week, Reed broke another pro football record, for yards rushing, as his Roughies beat Ottawa's Rough Riders. Brown, by the way, played nine seasons. Reed is in his IIth season with the Regina club ...:.... AREA HEALTH MEETING IN MARATHON Board members from the McCausland Hospital met with representatives of other district - hospitals and health agencies at Marathon High School on Saturday, August 25th.
