PAGE 4 TERRACE BAY NEWS APRIL 25,1973 Sports Slants - cont'd in the team dressing room, or any other time he's with other members of the club. It wasn't long after Bishop and Harkness were in the front office that Pete Stemkowski and Unger were traded off. Now don't you think the Wings would have made the playoffs this season with a couple of guys like Unger and Stemmer? Actually, the Wings had very little talent this season. Aside from 50-goal scorer Mickey Redmond and Marcell Dionne, they had very little. They were probably lucky to finish up as close to Buffalo (two points back) as they did. It should be pointed out that since Hark- ness and Bishop have been in the Wings' front office, the club has never made the playcffs. And from the way Buffalo Sabres looked in their quarter-final playoff against Montreal, it's very unlikely the Wings will make it for years to come - unless Boston, New York or Montreal falter - and that's unlikely. The firing of Johnny Wilson was not only very unpopular with NHL hockey writers and Detroit hockey fans, but also with Delvecchio, who can't say much because he still might play another season, and the greatest Wing ever, Gordie Howe, who is now a club vice- president. Howe, who has a sign on his Detroit Olympia office desk which reads:"Third assistant to the eight vice-president", has come right out and said that Wilson was given the shaft by the Wings management. He has assured everyone that he's not in- terested in the coaching job. "I'm not in- terested .. it's too shortlives," Howe says. You can't blame him. Delvecchio feels the same way. There's definitely something wrong with the Wings management since Jim Bishop took that leather chair in the front office in August, I969. They've had five coaches since then ... Bill Gadsby, Sid Abel, Harkness, Doug Barkley and Wilson. Wonder who the next unlucky person will be? I can't get over how Sid Abel must be laughing since he left the team. After all, his St. Louis Blues made the playoffs this year - and Detroit didn't. Watch for Gordie Howe to leave the organ- ization soon! The old saying about 'Nice guys finish last certainly applied with Johnny Wilson. All the Detroit writers and the Red Wing players liked him. 'So.did:the fans, But it didn't do him continued page 6 NOTICE The Semi-Annual Meeting of the Ladies Golf Club will be held on Tuesday, May 8th, 8:00 p.m., in the Club House.
