PAGE 8 TERRACE BAY NEWS APRIL 11, 1973 Sport Slants - cont'd ...... So there you have it. But if you're fam- iliar with my prognostications, you'll bet the other way ... the Ray Shank - Born Loser Club is still in operation, you know !!! SPORTS SHORTS: Sorry, there were no winn- ers in the 'Pick the Final Standings' contest. Nobody was even close. Matter of fact, I didn't receive a single entry. Well, I guess I should be thankful. I'll probably need that ten bucks to pay off debts when the Stan- ley Cup series is over ... Upset of the year has to be the I2-round loss by Muhammad Ali to unknown Ken Norton Saturday, March 3Ist. Have to say, though, that Ali was a brave man to stay in there II rounds with a broken jaw. Watching the bout on live TV, I thought, for the first couple of rounds, that Ali was only toying with Nor- ton. But as the fight went on, it was obvious he wasn't his old self and something had gone wrong. I don't imagine Muhammad will let that busted jaw get in the way of a championship match with George Foreman. Watch for him to rebound and be back fighting within four or five months ... Hey, and how about those Montreal Expos! They were the third best team in the National League in the exhibition schedule .... ROSSPORT Robert Wesley is visiting relatives in Manitouwadge. EDUCATION WEEK APRIL 8 - [4 Each spring for the past I0 years, Ontario has celebrated Education Week to promote clo- ser co-operation between the schools and the communities that support them, and to encour- age parents to see for themselves the kind of education their children receive. This year Education Week began on April 8th. Although many schools in Ontario now have programs that involve parents in a variety of activities on a regular, year-round basis, this is traditionally a time when special events are offered for parents and the general public. These activities deserve strong supp- ort. 4 Our children spend close to I,000 hours a ' year in school, but sometimes parents don't know enough about the schools they attend. Many aspects of education have changed since we were students, and while proven principals 3 of teaching still prevail, parents naturally : have questions about the kind of education 3 provided for their children. How are my children learning to read and write? How does the training they receive help prepare them for the adult world? Are they progressing quickly enough? Most impor- tant, what can I do, as a parent, to help my 8 children progress? These are serious and im- portant questions. The place to find the an- swers is in school. As Minister of Education, I know that our school system is among the best in North Amer- ica, a fact that is readily acknowledged by educators all across the continent. But as good as. our schools are, they can only impove % with the active and informed interest of par-. ents and the general public. Education Week may offer a special oppor- 2 tunity to visit your child's school and to talk to the dedicated men and women who teach : there. I will be visiting the school my child -ren attend and I urge parents across the prov -ince to do the same. 9 Thomas L. Wells, Minister.
