LAE} FEBRUARY 7, I973 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE I3 Sports Slants - cont'd ...... standings in the National Hockey League. There are several stories to derive from these standings when you compare them with this season's. First, there's definitely something lacking in the Boston Bruins lineup. Before the all-star game (Jan. 30) Bruins had already lost more games than all last sea- son and were a distant II points behind front- running Montreal Canadiens. Bruins, if you remember, started off slow this season. But once Bobby Orr came back, they regained the winning style that led them to a first place finish and the Stanley Cup last year. On Dec. 3I, I972, Bruins were tied for the east division lead with Montreal. Boston took over the lead for the first time this season New Year's night by trouncing Vancouver Canucks 8-I (that's that game in which Orr racked up six assists). Two nights later, Canadiens moved back into a tie with an 8-4 win over Toronto Maple Leafs. The night after that (Jan. 4) the Beantow- ners started having their problems. They muffed their chance of regaining the lead by losing 4-2 to St. Louis Blue. Then on Jan. 6, Habs moved four points up by blanking California 5-0. The following afternoon the first televised NBC Game of the Week-Boston lost its second straight, a 5-4 decision to the leaders of the west, Chicago Black Hawks. By Jan. II, Bruins managed only a I-I tie against Minnesota North Stars, despite the fact the North Stars were playing in Boston and it was the North Stars' fourth game in six nights. Up to the all-star game, Bruins had managed only four wins in nine starts. One of those five losses, by the way, was a 9-7 decision to New York Islanders, who, up to that point, had won only five games and were only averaging about two goals a game. What's wrong with the Bruins? That's a good question. Maybe the fact that Mike Walton has missed all the team's games since the start of the new year is one excuse. But it probably goes deeper than that. One thing I don't think is a genuine excuse is that Boston has missed Derek Sanderson. By the time you read this, Sanderson may be back in a Bruin uniform. But don't expect the Turk to lead them to a first place finish. If they do snap out of their serious slump, it won't be Sanderson who'll get them out of it Actually, it's sickening to see a guy col- lect $I million from a hockey club (Philadel- phia of the WHA) for having played eight games that amounts to $I25,000 a game, or an average hourly wage of close to $42,000-and then demand a $200,000 salary from the club (Boston) he defected from. Other things to notice by comparing this year's standings to last year's: I. Los Angeles Kings, who wound up dead last year, have already won more games this season with 27 games to play at the all-star game break. 2. Buffalo Sabres have six more points than they finished up with-and nine more wins. It could be more by the time you read this. 3. Toronto Maple Leafs, who snuck ahead of Detroit to grab that fourth playoff berth last year, fighting hard to stay ahead of sixth place Vancouver Canucks. 4. and, of course, the fine effort by Boom Boom Geoffrion's Atlanta Flames in their bid to make the playoffs in their initial season in the league. The Flames have already won more games than Buffalo, Vancouver, California, or Los Angeles won all last season. 5. And finally, if you look in the individual points race, you'll find that the Leafs haven't got a single player in the top 25. New York Islanders and California Golden Seals, the two last place clubs, are the only other teams not represented in the top 25. SCHREIBER LIBRARY NEWS Ten thousand books were exchanged by borrow- ers from the Schreiber Public Library in I972. And of great satisfaction to the board, many of the borrowers are the younger generation. The books borrowed do not include those reference books used in the library by students, nor, those read by the little book-worms who thrift=- ily read a couple while awaiting their turn to have a couple more checked out to take home. At the board of trustees' regular meeting Mrs. Inez McCuaig was elected chairman and Miss Gwen Hadley again accepted the important posi- tion of secretary-treasurer, with a heaty vote of appreciation, the board realizing that the bulk of the work is done by the unpaid officer in this combined position. Mrs. Claire Power was appointed librarian, pro tem-Mrs. Bill Kirkpatrick being on an ex- tended leave. Other members of the board are Mrs. Norah McGuire, Mrs. Rita McGrath and Mrs. Jacqueline Turner, each, happily, with a different inter- est in selection of reading material. The grant from the municipality was received and the rental for the library passed for pay- ment. continued page I6 ......
