CONGRATULATIONS! SNOWMOBILING 1S BEGINNING TO SHOW SIGNS OF MATURITY. BAN ON THREE -QUART PAPER MILK CONTAINERS A province-wide ban on three-quart paper milk con- tainers will go into effect on November 1st, 1973. Ontario's Environment Minister James Auld announced today . "The motivation behind this action is the same as for the stand we took against the disposable plastic milk jug earlier this year", said Mr. Auld. "We are trying fo ease the province's waste disposal burden". The one-year's time lag will allow dairies to use up existing stocks of the plasticized-paper containers and make other adjustments to the new regulations, Mr. Auld pointed out. "This gradual phase-out is preferable to an immed- * iate ban. Such sudden action aggravates waste dispo- sal problems as manufacturers and suppliers try to dump their stocks all at once." he said. "We have no cause to force a severe and unnecessary economic loss on these people." : "If it is found that use of this container increases or it begins to encroach other containers during this interim period, the situation could be reviewed and, if necessary, the effective date of the ban moved forward, " he cautioned. "Of course," Mr. Auld added, "the whole subject of milk containers will be examined by the Ministry's Task Force on Solid Waste and its special investigative committees."
