VEHICLES IN CANADA Transport Minister Don Jamieson said that he is highly displeased with the proposed action by General Motors to market in Canada 1100-1972 automobiles which are not eligible for sale in the United States under current United States Motor Vehicle Safety Re- gulations. The vehicles, 1972 model Camaros, Novas and Firebirds were manufactured in the United States after the September 1 deadline which requires that all ve- hicles meet new safety standards relating to bumpers, flammability of interior materials and illumination of instrument panel controls. In Canada, the same safety standards will apply to all vehicles manufactured after November 1, 1972, which includes the 1973 model year vehicles for which the regulations are intended to apply. On August 18. 1972, the Unitéd States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration turned down a company request which would have allowed the ve- hicles to be marketed in the United States. During the past week, the Canadian Government became aware that General Motors were considering marketing a limited number of these vehicles in Canada. Continued on Page 2 ..... INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR L.U. PROFESSOR Lakehead University was the only smaller uni- versity in the world represented at a recent gathering of internationally recognized researchers in the field of geology. The University was represented by Dr. Henri Loubat, a member of the Department of Geo- logy for the past five years who is dedicated to geological research in the region of Northwestern Ontario. His taking part in such an important inter- national meeting indicates that even though Lakehead University is relatively young, it has professors who are being recognized throughout the world for their work. The Penrose Conference, held periodically by the Geological Society of America, took place in Oregon and California between September 14 and 25 this year. One of the most prestigious meetings for geolo- gists throughout the world, the Penrose Conference usually focuses upon a narrow theme, and involves a small number of the world's leading specialists in that particular field. The purpose for this is to promote communications and co-operation between experts in the hope that new scientific discoveries will be in- spired.
