In his opening remarks, Mr. Penner said that the political aspect of the meeting could not be entirely overlooked because of the forthcoming federal election. He went on to give a statement of what he saw as the central issue of the present campaign, that of competency to govern the country. In his opinion, the Trudeau government has provided strong and able leadership for Canada, giving the nation direction that none of the opposition parties could hope to match. In "giving an account of his steward- ship" as the riding's M.P., Penner outlined his many duties as a Member and mentioned the special prob- lems of serving an area as large and as scattered as this. One compensation he had experienced was that with the number of small communities in this consti- tuency - he was able to get to know many people in each town, something he'd never be able to do in a city riding. A question-and-answer period followed and Mr. Penner was called upon to deal with a wide range of topics, from government incentive grants to business and the issue of foreign ownership in Canada, to items of local interest such as freight rates, develop- ment of regional resources and the postal service. The tone of the evening was completely informal, with a free exchange of ideas and opinions between Mr. Penner and those present. Mr. Penner said that he was impressed by the good turnout and expressed his thanks to those who had made the effort to attend.
