TERRACE BAY RESOURCE PROBLEMS DISCUSSED AT MEETING Mr. R. Sinotte chaired a meeting sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, with guest speakers, John L. Scott, Department of Northern Development, Mara- thon and WK. Fullerton, District Forester, Gerald- ton. The topic was Man and Resources, and the ob- ject of the meeting was to bring local problems of Resource use in Terrace Bay, before the Man and Resources National Conference Program regional meeting in Thunder Bay and provincial issues to a national workshop in Montebello, Quebec, October 29th to November 4th. Mr. Scott started the meeting by showing some interesting slides. Local interested citizens were asked to air their beefs and problems, at which time Mr. Scott and Mr. Fullerton would try to answer them, and take the main issues to the regional conference. The first point under discussion was the waste of Birch trees in this area. It was felt that birch trees are being under-utilized for commercial purposes, or as a secondary industry, due to marketing and transportation problems. Lack of access roads to lakes and other recreation- al areas caused a heated discussion. Ben Lapenskie assured the gathering that the Zenmac road is under repair by his department, but agreed that many other roads are closed to local hunters, fishermen and for recreational purposes. Another point brought out was that there is a lack of facilities in provincial parks, and that local resi- dents pay the same fee as out-of -province and American tourists pay to use the parks and recreation al facilities, so that Canadians are subsidizing American tourists, hunters and fishermen, who stay briefly and do not contribute to the economy. Zoning of land use was discussed, as well as in- creased industry in this area. Each person present felt that promotion of this North Country should be a main consideration at the regional and national levels. Mr. M. Purvis and Mr. R. Sinotte were chosen as delegates to attend the regional confersnce in Thunder Bay.
