PAGE 10 TERRACE BAY NEWS JULY 5, 1972 SUPERIOR SOUND The gymnatorium of Schreiber Campus of Lake Superior High School was filled to capacity on Friday, June 23, 1972, when the first Annual Graduation Exercises for Lake Superior High School were held. The gymnatorium was appropriately decorated for the occasion with black silhouettes lining the walls to depict the academic and athletic roles of school life. The school's letters in the school's colours of purple and white graced either side of the stage, while a gigantic Lake Superior High School crest, also in purple and white, formed an elegant backdrop for the stage upon which the graduates received their diplomas. Following the processional which included spec- ial guests, the teaching staff, and the graduates |, "O Canada" was played by Miss Brenda Cebrario at the piano. Rev. P. McKague read the invoca- tion, which was followed by Mr. E.J. Morgan, Director of Education, who greeted the gathering on behalf of The Lake Superior Board of Education. Mr. E .E. Forgues, Principal, then spoke on behalf of the staff, addressing his remarks mainly to the graduates. Mr. Alex Gordon, Vice-chairman of the Board, and Miss Dale Boutilier, President of the Student Council, presented proficiency trophies and awards to the following students: First year = Jade Dukes; Second year = Mary Bourke; Third year = Victor Dukes; Fourth year = Cathy Melnyk; Fifth year - Dale Boutilier. These students received a trophy from the Board, and an award from the Student Council. Mr. L. Fraser, Commercial Director, presented the typewriting trophies which are awarded by the Student Council to the students in each year who obtain the highest net speed. The winners this year were First year = Patricia McGrath; Second year = Brenda Cebrario; Third year = Sharon Scott; Fourth year = Susan Dimmery. This year the student with the highest average in French was Sonja Stojka. She was presented with a trophy donated by J.P. Tessier, a former teacher. A former principal, B.C . Stewart, donated a Multi=Credit Trophy to be awarded to the student receiving the most credits in four or fewer years in secondary school. Cathy Melnyk was the first recipient of this award, receiving it from Mr. H. Coe, a trustee of the Board. Another former prin- cipal, Mr. W.W. Rowsome, also donated a trophy. The W.W. Rowsome Trophy is awarded to the student who contributes the most to the school during the year. The winner this year was Peter Mushquash who receiv- ed the award from Mrs. R. Mulligan in the absence of Mr. G. Godin. Miss Dale Boutilier, President of the Student Council, this year received the Student Council Pres- ident's Trophy which is awarded to either the President or Vice-president of the Student Council for outstand- ing leadership. Mr. E.E. Forgues presented Dale with this trophy of which he was the original donor. Dr. McDonald, on behalf of the Board, then pre- sented Linda Birch, Cathy Graham, Dennis Martin and Anne Needham with awards for improvement and/or involvement. Mr. Leybourne presented Leo Legault with a slide rule from the Association of Professional Engineers of the Province of Ontario. This presented is made to the student with the highest aggregate, and who is continuing his studies in engineering or mathematics. Scholarship winners were as follows: - The Canadian Legion, Branch 109, Schreiber, $100 Scholarship to Miss Geraldine McBride, the top fourth-year student, presented by Mr. G. Nicol. Miss McBride also received the Oddfellows and Rebekah Lodges $100 Scholarship as the top fourth- year commercial student. Mrs. G. Hamilton made this presentation. Mr. H. Coe presented the Lake Superior Board of Education Scholarship to Marilyn Benko, the fourth- year student with the highest average. Mrs. S. Benko presented the Women of the Moose, Branch 1426 $50 Bursary to Miss Judy Chopty, a fourth- year student. Miss Lola Scott, a fifth-year student, was presented with the Catholic Women's League $100 Bursary by Mrs. L. Chicoine, while Miss Aileen Ross, also a fifth-year student, was the recipient of the Knights of Columbus, St. Edward's Council, No. 3334 $100 award, presented by Mr. M. Nicol. A $100 Scholarship was also awarded to a top fifth- year student by the Ladies" Auxiliary to the Canadian Legion, Branch 109, Schreiber. Miss Dale Boutilier received this award from Mrs. G. Davis. Dale also received the Lake Superior Board of Education award as the top fifth-year student. Mr. C. van Eeden, Business Administrator of the Board made this presen- tation.
