A halloween party with treasure hunts, films, games and refreshments was enjoyed halloween night This winter the committee has made a rink behind the school building for the children's use and present- ly a slimoastics program is being conducted a couple of afternoons a week for the ladies of the village. Mr. Seppala thanked Mr. Wilde for the excellent report on the year's activities. The property chair- man presented his report. A motion was made that all current accounts be paid. John Joiner was to approach the Water Resources Association regarding a different rate for this facility at the centre. A vote of thanks was given thr retiring committee for the excellent way the Centre was run and projects completed. The new slate of officers are - John Joiner, Floyd Harnden, Thor Olsen, Chas Wilde, Romeo Bouchard all re-elected. Romeo Bouchard was appointed chai man and Chas Wilde the secretary for 1972. Con- gratulations were offered the incoming officers for the year 1972. ALTAR SOCIETY MEETS The first meeting of the new year for St. Berchman'y Altar Society was held at the home of Mrs. E. Ger- ow Thursday evening. The Jinuary meeting had to b cancelled owing to the severe cold and stormy weather. Mrs. Herb Legault, vice president presided in the absence of the president, Mrs. Kenney and welcome the women present. The meeting opened with prayer for the recent deceased villagers. Mrs. Todesco acted as secretary in the absence of Mrs. M. Hubelit and read the minutes and corres- pondence. The treasurer's report was also heard and | a report on recent entertainment. Several thank you cards were filed and accounts passed for payment. A report was heard on the repairs on the furnace and if was decided to purchase new floral arrange- ments for the Altar. The secretary was instructed to purchase articles and materials for the spring penny auction. Mrs. Legault voiced appreciation to everyone who helped in the building of the crib on the church lawn at Christmas. Members discussed the possibility of a winter car- nival in the village and elect a queen, princesses etc. Inquiries are to be made regarding this. The members decided not to schedule any enteftain- ment till March as other organizations in the village have intentions of sponsoring some projects. The Pros and Cons of a program to be instituted here to supply employment for youths from 15 to 25 during the summer were studies and noted that such a plan had it's good points. It was announced that several girls and boys appeared anxious of this opportunity. This project would take in cleaning up the water front, repairing of some docks, painting and repairs where possible, cleaning up vacant lots, removal of old cars. Of course this would only be done with the co-operation and permission of the property owners. Following prayers and adjournment, Mrs. Gerow served luncheon and a pleasant hour was enjoyed. Mrs. Mac Hubelit has returned from a holiday in Hendricks Lake, B.C. with her daughter Mrs. Roy Rochon and family. Mrs. Pringle Plummer has returned to her home in Cobble Hill, B.C. after attending the funeral of her mother the late Mrs. Agnes Sully. Mrs. Lenard lbey has returned from McCausland Hospital . "THE OWL'S HOOT" THOUGHT OF THE WEEK "The living need charity more than the dead". - George Arnold ENTERS DEBATING TEAM: Representing Lake Superior High School at the Northwestern Regional Debating Competition held on January 29, 1972, were John Souliere and Ann Needham, both third year students at Schreiber Campus. Accompanied by Mr. R. Pokorny, debat- ing coach, the students travelled to Dryden where they competed against representatives from Red Lake, Thunder Bay and Dryden. The topic under debate was "Does Canada have a Distinctive Identity Capable of Fostering Nationalism?" Although Lake Superior's team did not capture first place, it did make a good showing and gained valuable experience for future competition. r e| d continued page 17
