NOVEMBER 18, 1971 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 13 MEDICAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FOR NWO The Thunder Bay Medical Society in co-operation with McMaster University has launched a special program designed to encourage students from Northwestern Ontario to train in Medicine at Mc- Master. Increasing the output of doctors from medical schools alone will not assure adequate dis- tribution of doctors with the right type of training in all regions of the province. In the absence of a medical school in northwestern Ontario it seemed desirable to establish a special program to facilitate the admission to Medical School of students from this region in the hope that a significant proportion would wish to return here to practise after graduation To sustain the students' interest in the region and to prepare them for the problems of practice which are special to Northwestern Ontario, it is expected that the students will spend a portion of their under- graduate and post-graduate experience in clinical training centres in Thunder Bay 'and in small under- serviced northern communities. Leadership in the development of this program has come from local doctors in Thunder Bay. The McMaster Medical School, which is the new- est of the five medical schools in Ontario, will graduate its first class of students in May 1972. The traning programe is unusual for Medicine with respect to the emphasis on small group teaching and problem solving under the guidance of tutors and the extensive use of self-instructional resources such as audio-visual slide tape carousels and videotapes. The program has been shortened from the traditional four-year course with long summer holidays to a three-year course with only one month vacation. The medical program at McMaster is also unusual in admitting students who have successfully complet- ed three years of study at a recognized university without regard to their field of study. A background in the biological sciences is desirable, but unlike other medical schools it is not essential for admiss- ion. In slecting students for the program, the Admissions Committee attempts to evaluate the per- sonal qualities of the applic ant, as well as academ- ic achievement. For further information and application materials, interested students should write to the Office of The Registrar, McMaster University, Hamilton. Appli- cants for entry to the program in September 1972 must be received before December Ist, 1971.
