PAGE 14 TERRACE BAY NEWS OCTOBER 6,. 1971 STEW BRYDGES SPEAKS OUT You're dammed if you do and you're dammed ifyoun don't. That is the position Premier Wm, Davis found him- self in when his elected members of the Provineinl cab - inet tumed down the request to allow additional gmnts to Sepamte School Boards who wanted to extend theirSe- condary Schools to include grade 11-12-13, It was the cab- inet that ruled and the Prime Minister had to make the announcement, It is interesting to note that both leadersof the opposition, Robert Nixon Liberal and Stephen Lewis N. D,P, ,stated that they would support additional sepa - te grants, It makes one wonder what would happex if their candidates say no, just the same as the elected cabinet members. However this is not the main. issue. Why has this quest- ion gained such an importance and particularly pow that an election is planned? Why did they not ask for additional aid ten years ago? Why not twenty years ago? What be- ought this question up at this time? We the voters can be blamed in part. A deczds ago the ma jority sat back and allowed 2 small minority group to talk the Boards of Education into withdrawing religion from the schocls. Today we find that virtually litile or Go religious education is even discussed in cur Secondary Schools. Why did we allow this to happen, Do not let anyone fool you. All men are religious os be- lieve in some form of religion, Let a veteran who served overseas tell you, The loudest non believer was gemezally the first one to cry for help from the unknown when the enemy closed in or danger was pending, The so called non believer found that he needed strength and he had to call for help. : # As we allowed religious instruction and discussion to be dropped, drugs took over, From the occasional user it i pow up to alarming large numbers, Brilliant students fsom all walks of life have blown their brains with all the common varnety drugs that have been pushed in the streets, The users claim that they are looking for something and they need this route to escape, Where is the religious be- Lief that there is a strong power to help? It is time that we stop being conned by the few, It is now time that we stand up and be counted. The Separate School supporters have made the first move, They want re- ligious instruction in their schools for the age group we call young adults, 18 years of age and up. There is no reason in the world why the Secondary School system we have at the present time can not add to their course of study 2 course on relgion. Why not ? This could be an optional course, It could be a course just the same as Latin Math or Science, There is no reas- on in the world by both Protestant and Roman Catholic csur ses could not be made available, If religion was taught in the Secondary School level, it might be the answer to help solve the drug problem, After all 2000' years ago 2a ~~ man aught religion and it caught on. Man, over the years has tried to follow the teachings of the great teacher, It has beld up for 2000 years. May be we have forgotten how to to teace religion or maybe we just don't want to, Maybe this is what has caused all our troubles, (HUNDER BAY RIDING PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE sponsored Political Advertisement. from your . .. pt ---- _;,".)L NOTICE TO RESIDENCE OF SCHREIBER AND WEST TO DUBLIN THere will be a power interuption from 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. Daylight Saving Time on Friday, October 8th for repairs.
