OUTERS SURVIVAL TRIP Under the direction of Mr. Jon Ferguson, the out- ers group of Terrace Bay High School, left Friday morning, May 7, 1971, on a survival trip to Fishnet Lake. We hiked as far as Box Lake which is about half way to Fishnet and decided to make camp there as the rest of the trail was covered with snow and ice. We ate our lunch at 1:00 p.m. which was to be out last before we started the twenty-four hour survival pro- gram. We divided into groups and piched locations for our separate camping sites. We then proceeded to clear out the underbrush and cover the sites with spruce boughs and make our shelters. There was a variety of shelters including, pup tents plastic tents, "a spruce bough hut" and just a sheet of plastic over sleeping bags. After we set up camp the time was ours to do whatever we wanted with it. Some people slept, some went hiking but most were invoived in the pursuit of food. Since we had found no food, except for one small speckled trout, that night we sat around the camp- fire sampling different kinds of survival food like labrador tea and boiled birch bark. After a wet night, during which most of our shelters held up in, we broke camp and left for home about 9:00 a.m. The purpose of this trip was to teach us how to survive in the bush in an emergency situation. The guests were the women providing a home away from home for the out of town students and Mrs. Row- some and Mrs. Ferguson, representing the wives of the staff. Molly Ross, one of the students, poured coffee from a silver service. The table had a white linen cloth and was centered with white candles and a large deep pink rose which had been made in class. The other tables were centered with wicker baskets holding lily of the valley and pink daisies. The food was prepared by the girls. '~ Photos next column..... - MAY 12, 1971 T.B.H.S. ENTERTAINED BY GRIMSBY BAND On Thursday, May 6, 1971, Terrace Bay High School was host to another fine group of musicians. To the pleasure of Terrace Bay High School students, the Grimsby High School Band from Grimsby, Southern Ontario, presented a concert Thursday morning. Under the direction of Mr. Smith, the band per- formed several popular compositions including "Theme of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Exodus and Swinging Safari". The audience particularly enjoyed "Little Bop Riding Hood", a modern version play of "Little | Red Riding Hood". While the rest of the band pro- vided musical accompaniments, three other members and a narrator enacted the plot of the story in a way, very different from that of the original story. Mr. Rowsome thanked the director and members of the band and complimented them on their excellent talents. The members of the band were then treated to re- freshments in the Girls' Occupation Room. cont'd page 13....0000
