MARCH 4, 1971 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 21 LEGION AWARD WINNERS Sylvia Speziale, Tana viorrow, Michael Anderson and myrna Gauthier were presented with awards by L.V. Bourke, secretary-treasurer of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 109, at a ceremony in Holy Angels Separate School . These were winners, at the local level, in literary composition contest, sponsored nationally by the Royal Canadian Legion. In the essay section, Sylvia Speziale was first and Tana Morrow, second. In the poetry section michael Anderson was first, iviyrna Gauthier second. Their entries have been forwarded but no reply has been received from either the district or provingtl level. . Bourke read the purpose of the contest and some of the guidelines. In this century 112,000 Canadians gave their lives for freedom. Like the youth of today they were committed to the idea of liberty. The aim of this contest is to relate these sacrifices in war to the freedom which we now take for granted. The contest was open to elementary and high schools. Anthony Speziale, vice principal, introduced Mr. Bourke, thanking him for the incentive offered the students in this Legion project, saying the school had used the idea as part of their language program, with all the students taking part. Mr. Speziale welcomed John Stephens, academic administrator from the Lakehead and other guests at the ceremony. SCHREIBER CURLING CLUB On February 26th and 27th, the Schreiber Curling Club hosted it'd first + Family Bonspiel . Families were encouraged to form rinks and to participate in the enjoyable sport of curling. Unofficial adoptions were permitted and twelve rinks entered in the fun. : The winners of the spiel were as follows: First Event - Ist prize = W. Stefurak, D. Stefurak, B. Turner, W. Turner; 2nd prize = W. Dukes, J. Dukes, V. Dukes, C. Dukes; Second Event - 1st prize - E. Holmes, M. Holmes, M. Reid, J. Reid; 2nd prize - J. Gordon, C. Gordon, E. Gordon, B. Gordon; Third Event = 1st prize = B. Welbourne, D. Furlonger, L. Rajotte, N. Racioppi; 2nd prize = D. Carmisan, M. Slater, S. Hughes, L. vadge. The individual trophies were presented by Brian Birch. Turner FUNERAL OF THE LATE JOHN PHILLIPS St. Andrew's United Church was filled on February 26th for the funeral of the late John D. (Jack) Phillips, whose death occurred suddenly on February 24th. The service was conducted by Rev. E.C. Prinselaar, with Mrs. George Lengyel as organist. Attending were long-time family friends, representatives of railway unions, the 1.0.0.F., the Ontario Hydro, the Municipal council and all business firms in this town. In his eulogy Mr. Prinselaar said Mr. Phillips would long be remembered in Schreiber, every time a light was turned on or electric power used, since it was largely through his efforts and during his term as Reeve in 1948 when the hydro power was turned on - in the town. The honorary pall bearers were F.V. Harness, R.B. Spadoni, L.R. McCuaig, Toi Seppala, Hubert Wea- ver, George Walsh and Lloyd Small. The acting pall bearers were Gino Caccamo, Bill Weaver, Bill Kushnieryk, Alvin Slater, Geoff. Birch, and Harry Jartus. Interment was in Schreiber cemetery. Mr. Phillips who was 80 years old, born in Arn- stein, Ontario, - continued on page 22
