PAGE 10 TERRACE BAY NEWS MARCH 4, 1971 WINTER CARNIVAL DAY Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves on the Big Day - Friday, February 18th at Terrace Bay High School. Events were centred on the ballfield during the morning, the teams challenged each other in football, volleyball, an egg toss, soccer and a sack race (mostly minus the sacks). After a ten minute warm-up inside, everyone rushed out to aid their House in a tug=o-war. House League One was the unde'eated victor, winning both of the tug-o- wars. Next on the agenda were the broomball games held in the arena. House One won the first game, with the sole goal scored by Charlie Daley. The teachers got involved in the next game and House Two won this time, with two goals scored by Alex Vanderkam and Dale Riley. Everyone parted for lunch and back in the lunchroom at school, de- licious hot dogs, sloppy=-joes, donuts and baking were being sold, along with hot dogs to Joey Hales, we decided to let him have the rest for free, but he must have be en pretty full by then because he didn't come back for too many more. Some more events outside in the afternoon: the tied-together race, log sawing for the boys, the nail driving contest, a relay and a piggyback race. In- side again for the final activities of the day. Results Ron Zwaresh won the onion-peeling contest; Paulette Coupal won the cracker-eating contest, although she had more crackers on the floor than in her mouth and although she had trouble learning how to whistle, Garry Pinkerton tried unsuccessfully to say a tongue- twister after beating the others in eating a lemon, so he had to give the title to Bevin Schritt who had more control over his tongue; Joey Hales gulped down a big bottle of pop, with most of it running down the front of his shirt, and he was the winne: in that event; in the gum chewing contest, Mr. Baron of Home Room 1 got his fowls moving the quickest and was the first to blow a bubble, although Eddie Zwar- esh easily blew the biggest bubble, only to have it . smashed all over his face. Mrs. Cotton judged the beards and thought Philip Burns' to be the longest. Alan Papineau, apparently is the sexiest-looking guy in a beard. Mr. Saranpaa, secretly admired by Mrs. Cotton, was judged to be wearing the scraggiest-looking beard. Nice go- ing Mr. Saranpaa; it pays to have contacts. Poor Mr. Roberts after trying so hard, didn't even get a consolation prize. There's always next year Uncle Al. Jack O'Javee is our champion checker player of 1971. Anyone care to challenge him? Being cripp didn't stop Charlie Simmer from running away (pun) with the crib title. In the chess games, there was a tie between David Ramsay who claimed he was given the title by his opponent and Glen Kujbida, his opponent who denied this rumour. House One did it again - they won the Snow Sculpture Contest with a very appropriate theme to their sculpture. The overall Home Room winner was Home Room 5, and House League One defeated House Two and became the champs of the year. Ralph Coe and Louise Brooks are our Carnival Kin "and Queen - a great choice made by the majority . The day finally came to a close and everyone straggled home - with only a few to stay to clean up.
