PAGE 16 TERRACE BAY NEWS FEBRUARY 18,1971 TRIBUTES PAID TO THE LATE W. HARRIS The flags of the schools in Schreiber were at half mast on February 8th in respect to the late Waiter S. Harris who had been 45 years as secretary-treasurer of the school board. Mr. Harris' funeral was held that day in St. Andrew's United Church, his death occurring suddenly in his home on February 5th at the age of 82. The service was conducted by the Rev. E.C. Prinselaar with Mrs. George Lengyel as organist. The honorary pall bearers were Reeve R.V. Harness, councillor R.B. Spadoni, George Duncan, Cyril Sparkes, Alec Gordon and Sam Boyd Sr. The active pall bearers were W.G. Furlongers, Sam Harris, Archie McColeman, Gary Drake, Sam Boyd Jr. and Alvin Slater. Interment was in Schreiber cemetery. Representing the Department of Education were G.R. Saumur, principal of the public school; E.J. Morgan, director of the Lake Superior Board of Education; R.A. Cressman, supervising principal of elementary schools and B.C. Stewart, principal of Schreiber high school . In tribute to Mr. Harris' many years as Sunday School superintendant, a group of the C.G.I.T. representing the youth of the church assisted the senior choir for the service. Mr. Harris is survived by two sons, Walter of Thunder Bay and Robert of Terrace Bay and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife in 1922 and his second wife in 1967. He was born in London England and came to Canada in 1909, first to Dorion to visit with relatives j and then to employment in White River and Chtipleau | and to Schreiber in 1912 where until his retirement | he worked with the C.P.R. car department. Mr. Harris' consuming interest, outside his family and home was school affairs and he was noted for his detailed, accurate minutes in meticulous writing. When problems for the board arose Mr. Hatris could be relied on to recall a similar instance and the year and meeting in which it had been dealt with. And his memories of early days and the difficulties | in arranging a board meeting were most refreshing . In tribute to his long-time service to the school his portrait hangs there. Peter McKague of Terrace Bay. © KOOL KATS HOST FAMILY DAY The Schreiber Kool Kats held a Family Day at the west pond with the following winners in various events: - 3 and under, boys = Ist = Steven Bottomley 2nd = Mark Campbell; girls - Ist = Lori Nesbitt; 2nd | Brenda Bottomley. ] 8-12 years - boys = Ist = Kevin Bottomley, 2nd - Greg Bottomley; girls = 1st = Karen Thrower; 2nd - Bonnie Major. 12 and over - boys - Mickey Ferland; Girls - Debbie | Major and Pam Nesbitt. A trail ride and bonfire was planned for February 26th and first arrangements made for a dance in March the date of this yet to be decided. Further information on both these events will be given at the meeting on February 24th, at which there will be a workshop. Walt Klassen presided for the meeting.
