PAGE 12 TERRACE BAY NEWS FEBRUARY 11, 1971 OPEN RECEPTION IN HONOR OF REV. J.M. CANO, V.F. ON THE OCCASION OF HIS DEPATURE FROM HOLY ANGELS PARISH, SCHREIBER TIME-2 to 5 p.m. SUNDAY, FEB. 21st 1 SCHREIBER TOWN HALL everyone welcome! Verne Hopper Retirement - cont'd from page 9 .... Other presentations were made by Jack Chapman and Al Chisholm. : Other guests at the luncheon were Harry Coe, Harry Duggan, John Mikus and Verne's son Bob who works at the mill as a Pipefitter. The Service Department crew made a presentation to Verne on January 28th. On January 29th a Union-sponsored stag was held. The highlight being the presentation to Verne of the bell from the first diesel engine. That engine was scrapped in about 1958 and unknown to most people the bell was retained. It was mounted on a yoke and base, polished and presented to Verne inscribed with his dates of Company service and the wording "ring when lonesome". Therefore, if you hear a locomotive bell in town it will not be a diesel locomotive running on Poplar Crescent. Verne and his wife Lois with daughter Mary Jane will continue to live in Terrace Bay. Lois Hopper continues working as a Registered Nurse at the McCausland Hospital . Best wishes go out to Verne for many years of happy retirement. TO THE EDITOR Last week the Principals and staff of the Terrace Bay and Schreiber High Schools were notified that the two High Schools were to be amalgamated to form two campuses under the leadership of one Principal. This change was to become effective September 1, 1971 This recommendation by the Director of Education was slated as an 'action' item to be voted on at the regular Board meeting on Monday evening, February 8th. A group of concerned citizens and teachers be- came alarmed at the apparent precipitous action of the Director and the Board in their attempt to make such a major change without informing the Principals, the Teachers, the students and the general public of the objectives and benefits of the projected program. The action of this group was instrumental in having the Board delay action until the next meeting : scheduled for Terrace Bay on Saturday, February 20th, at 11:00 a.m. R.R. Wainwright, Chairman of the Lake Superior Board of Education, indicated that the Board would accept briefs from interested citizens, groups of citizens and organizations. We urge all citizens to give the matter serious consideration and submit their briefs to the Board so that meaningful discussion can take place on this important issue at the next meeting. A Trustee from Marathon served notice at last night's meeting that he intends to make a motion to amalgamate the two schools under one Principal, at the next board meeting. The future of our schools, our principals, our teachers and our children are at stake. We cannot afford to let any individual or group of individuals arbitrarily make major changes in our schooling system without keeping us informed. It's up to you as in- dividuals to make the Board aware of your thoughts | and concern and to insist that the Board communicate. their plans and objectives back to the people who are affected by these major policy changes. 'A.N. Chisholm. Sympathy is expressed to Mr. Bob Harris and family on the death of his father, Mr. Walter Harris of Schreiber. Sympathy is expressed to the family on the passing of John Thomas, a former resident of Terrace Bay .
