Mrs. Marjory Morrill, librar- fan, reported at the public li- brary board meeting in Schrei- ber that 46 mew readers have taken out membership. During July a total of 798 books were borrowed, in Au- ' gust, 760; September, 836; and in October, 950. Fines are again being levied or overdue books. The 'fine free' summer, offered by the board on a trial basis was dis- cussed. It was found that bor- rowers were taking advantage of the gesture by keeping books longer and depriving other members of the use of them. Mrs. Norah McGuire reported on the recent library conven- tion she and Mrs. M. J. Mec- Grath had attended. Reeve F. V. Harness joined the members for a discussion of the library--its history in Schrtiber, the present library {and the board's hopes and plans 'for the future. | The local Kinsmen have do- [nated a copy of their book The Cross and The Square, Miss :Gwen Hadley, secretary-treas- urer, reported. A copy of the Ontario Gazette containing the revoked sec- tions of the 1966 Public Li- braries Act was read and dis- cussed, and placed on the agenda for the budget meeting, Trustees requested additional copies. of the Public Library standards for Canada. Accounts totalling $604.56 were UCW MEMBERS VIEW SLIDES A donation to John Milton Society for the Blind was ap- proved at November meeting of Schreiber United Church Wom- en. The resignation, due to ill health, of Mrs. Nettie Thrower as treasurer, was accepted with regret. Her position will be fill- ed by Mrs. John Spilane. Mrs. Oscar Niemi, sewing convener, reported two quilts now being completed and asked members to bring items for Christmas bazaar to December meeting. Plans for Christmas tea were discussed and it was agreed the hours of 2:30-5 p.m. should be strictly observed for the sales. Members agreed to cater for two wedding dinmers. Mrs. Lillian Christie, card secretary, gave a lengthy re- port which included cards sent during summer recess. Mrs. E. C. Prinselaar spoke on Stewardship during devotion- al period. Her son, Corned Prin- selaar later showed slides of scout jamborees in Thunder Bay and Northwestern Terri- tories; the later during the Queen's visit. Mrs. Bill Gerow thanked members who contributed to success of church's 50th anni- versary celebration. Lunch was served by Mes- dames Bern Jacomb, Ann Etches and Della Moore. WI MEMBERS TO PACK YULE CHEER BASKETS Eight guests were welcomed by Mrs. Wesley Clemens, pre- siding for regular meeting of Schreiber Women's Institute on Nov. 10. A minute's silence was ob- served in memory of the war dead, followed by the singing of O Canada, Roll call was answered by telling where, and in what place each member had attended her first institute meeting, and de- scribing the program at it. The motto for the meeting was: Look backward and give thanks -- look forward and have courage. Mrs. C. Todesco read min- utes and correspondence which included an invitation to attend 4-H Achievement Day being held in Thunder Bay in November, December and January. Mrs. Alvin Slater presented the financial statement in the absence of Mrs. Nettie Throw- er. Mrs. Fred Harness reported on the recent panel discussion on citizenship whica she had ar- ranged in the town hall. Mrs. Clemens reported on the recent WI convention held in Thunder Bay. A showing of a film on the mentally retarded has been ar- ranged for January meeting with the public invited to attend. Members were asked to bring donations for the Christmas cheer baskets to Decembér meeting. Christmas penny auc tion and a potluck supper will be enjoyed at the meeting. Mrs. Ken Williamson report- ed sending cards for various oce casions and receiving several thanksou notes. Following the meeting Ms, Webster, showed a large selee- tion of a company's cosmetics and demonstrated proper makes up on thrée of the WI members, each with different coloring. Mrs. Webster was assisted by Mrs, Ken Williamson and Mrs. Bob Campbell, local agents fo the products. Mrs. Frank Walker won the door prize. Lunch was served by Mes. Todesco, Mrs. Clemens, and Mrs. Williamson. The tea table centre was formed of crossed ' flags and poppies. COMMITTEE IS NAMED FOR COMMUNITY HALL Fifteen villagers turned out Sunday evening at Rossport Community Hall to elect a new committee. Mrs. Ibey chaired the meeting and Mrs. Seppala acted as secretary. : Minutes and financial state- ment were reviewed and .adopt- ed. It was agreed to ask Mrs. Paulmert to audit the books. Owing to the cost of upkeep and the heating of the hall, it was decided to charge a small fee per child when using the hall for physical education and rec- reation. The 1970-71 committee elected were Mrs. E. Gerow, Mrs. T. Seppala, Mrs. L. Ibey, Jack Campbell and Clem Downey. Mrs. Todesco was nominated but declined owing to ill health. A discussion was held when several ratepayers were not pleased with the school having! been stripped of its furnishings, especially the kitchen stove, re-' frigerator, table and chairs. They felt that they sLould have been left since Rossport rate- payers paid for them. Also, the playground equipment as most of it was purchased by the Jun- ior Red Cross and the table games by the Women's Institute. As to the desks, they were an- tiquated, out of date and not of much use to anyone. As:to such time when the com- mittee will be appointed to op- erate the school building, the Community Hall Comittee will loan the money to the school to cover operating costs such as fue] and hydro as ratepayers felt that the school building be- ing closed without heat would mold and deteriorate. Mrs. Todesco drew the lucky ticket giving Mrs. Ibey the stainless steel flatware offered as a draw. The meeting ad- journed and the committee held a short business meeting. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Douglas of Beardmore visited the Todes- cos Wednesday. Doug Ray and John MacCau- ley of Gurney spent the week- end with Alfred Ray.
