PAGE 12 UNITED CHURCH EXCEEDS OBJECTIVE Members of the United Church of Canada have exceeded the objective of the Day's Pay Campaign initiated in 1968 by more than $100,000. And they have done it eight months sooner than expected. The Executive of the General Council, top admin- istrative body of the Church in annual meeting in Toronto this week heard the good news that the Day's | Pay appeal launched by the General Council at Kingston in September, 1968, had resulted in |. - $1,867,000 in 20 months. -The objective was @ $1,750,000 in 28 months. The tunds are being spent entirely on overseas development and relief upon recommendation by a special committee formed for this purpose plus the United Church's Board of World Mission and Committ- ee on Overseas Relief and Inter-Church Aid. The General Council Executive also heard today that the Mission and Service Fund - national fund of the Church which underwrites all work at home and overseas -- was showing a 2.52% increase for the first four months of this year and that over 600 applications for projects had been received from congregations. (These are projects in Canada and overseas and represent all phases of the Church's involvement). The members of the Executive expressed their heartfelt thanks for this concerned response to the One Day's Pay appeal . MINOR HOCKEY BANQUET AND AWARD NIGHT Schreiber Minor Hockey held a very successful wind-up banquet at the Legion Club Room on Sunday, May 3rd. Some ninety boys attended along with their coaches, managers and the Executive. Turkey supper was served by the Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 109. The following boys received trophies - Blacks - Steven Ross and Billy Souliere; Moose - Bobby Smilsky and Barry Glad; Texaco - Terry Jartus and Mike Mulligan; Filane-Caccamo - Greg Caccamo and Pat Mulligan; Bantams - Terry Armstrong and Paul Martin; Major Pee Wee, Rookie of the Year - Bruce Hiller; Bantams, Rookie of the Year - Morgan McGrath; Filane's Trophy - best defenceman - Leon St. Jean and Armstrong Trophy - best defenceman Bantam - Larry St. Jean. Pee Wee house league trophy won by Blacks and received by Captain, Steven Ross. The Bantam trophy was received by Captain Larry St. Jean. ICKKACC DAT INC WO MAY 14, 1Y/U ~ A new trophy presented by Chapples of Schreiber to the leagues most gentlemanly player went to Paddy Stokes. ' The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Sportsman of the Year Award by President, Frank McKenna to Tom Quinton for his efforts in holding a very successful skate=a-thon last Novem- ber to raise funds for minor.hockey. | Thanks goes to the following for all their time and effort in helping the Schreiber minor hockey - Frank McKenna, Bill Stefurak, Jim Armstrong, Mike Smilsky, Ted Wilson, Brian Duffy, Stew Law, Gerald and Harold Fisher, Cosmo Filane, Ted Morrow, Bob and Bill Campbell, Ken Davis, Joe Caccamo, John St. Jean, Tom Quinton, Bill Carmichael, Redge Bailey, Borden Ross, Norman Boon and Chuck Foreman. TOWN TOPICS Mrs. Lester McCuaig is visiting her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Trowsse in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Miss Gwen Hadley, President of the F.W.T.A.O with Mrs. Gloria Miller as a guest, attended the Spring Assembly in Atikokan. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Cates and Jennifer of Edson Alberta, and Helen Kaemingh, Aylmer, Elton and Frances Cates of Emo, were visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Glad. Dr. and Mrs. R.W. Welbourne and family of Thunder Bay visited his parents Mr. and Mrs. Harry Welbourne. The United Church men will hold a May-time- tea Sunday, May 17th in the Church Hall. ° ANNOUNCEMENT Mr. and Mrs. Harold McParland will hold an Open Reception in their home on Saturday, May 16th from 8 to 10 p.m. in honour of their 25th Anniversary . BIRCH-DUNCAN VOWS EXCHANGED IN ST. JOHN'S CHURCH ENS CRURCH St. John's Anglican Church was the setting for the 3 p.m wedding ceremony on Saturday April 25th of Brenda Jane Duncan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Duncan, Wawa and Philip Godfrey Birch, son of Mr. and Mrs, Godfrey Birch, Schreiber. Rev. A.L. Chabot officiated at the ceremony and the organist was Mrs. Lester McCuaig. Given in marriage by her father the bride looked radiant in a formal empire styled gown in rayon and nylon lace over reyon taffeta, scalloped lece over skirt extended to oval shaped trein end long lace sleeves.
