NEYLON HONOURED ON RETIREMENT Dennis Neylon, (Denny to everyone in Schreiber) was honoured at several occasions arranged by his friends marking his retirement on pension, from the C.P.R. service. Prior to the actual day, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Guina hosted a dinner party when a lazy boy chair was presented to Denny. When he finished his last days' work friends met at the station with officers and members of the var- ious office staffs to offer congratulations and Borden Ross presented a substantial purse in token of their good wishes. The same evening a group met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Guina to celebrate Denny's retirement ond presented a table for his new home in Dublin - just west of Schreiber. . On behalf of the others Martyn Ryan presented a dining table - in absentia! Martyn in a humourous | speech told Denny that the plan had been to heap the table with food and to emphasize the point, that next time they met in his home, it would be his turn = and he should note, the extra leaves provided. The table had not arrived but Denny received an elegant picture of it, heaped with food. Adding much to Denny's enjoyment was a telephone call from Mrs. Delores Alexander (who had contri- buted to the chair gift) in Rockaway, N.J..recal|- _ ing happy days of her girlhood when Denny was an adopted member of the Holland family. Also delighting Denny was a long letter from Mr. and Mrs. Joe McGrath of Ottawa, formerly of Schreiber, accompanying a gift, and telling him that during summers they planned to revive a series of parties in which Denny had played a leading role. A cake, made and given to Denny by Mr. and Mrs. Con Duggan, for the evening party, was much admired for it's original frosting design - miniature replicas of the CPR station, flanked by Irish lad, in breeks and top hat, hurling away a mop and ail. < Attending the party were - Martyn and Betty Ryan, Russell and Beth Macadam, Alex and Clair Power, John and Teresa Power, Isabel and Tom Borutski, Irene and Ed Borutski. cont'd next column. TERRACE BAY NEWS MAY 7, 1970 Denny is one of Schreiber's proudest citizens - Schreiber did not adopt him - he chose Schreiber as his home. He came to Canada in 1928, from the city of Innis} in county Clare, Ireland, first to Killaloe, where i he worked on farms, then to Schreiber with the $5.00 a month lads 'from the Valley', and for a short stint worked his own farm in Slate River. In 1941 he returned to Schreiber and was employed by the CPR as a rock watchman and since June 1959 has been caretaker and grounds keeper at the CPR station . where his witty Irish comments are treasured. He is that rare individual, completely happy in his daily life, his daily stroll an uplift to all who meet" him and their greatest satisfaction his decision to remain in Schreiber.
