ell M_ARCH 5, 1970 : RETARDATION PROGRAM DISCUSSED Rev. T.G. Husser presided for a meeting of the Association for the Mentally Retarded, held in Schreiber town hall. For the benefit of new members and those unable to, attend prior meetings president, Mrs. Gerald anning, reported as follows: - ast May an interested group of parents, teachers rand other concerned people met with Mr. C. Because of questions raised before the June meeting it was decided to make it a public meeting, leaving it to be decided then if an organization was needed. Mr. Feron spoke again as did E.J. Morgan, supt, of » the Lake Superior Board of Education. Unanimous approval was given by the forty-four who became members that night. Executive of the Association are Mrs. Gerald Banning, President; Mrs. Lois Hopper, first vice- president; Miss Muriel Holmes, second vice-president Mrs. Dorothy Lengyel, recording secretary; Miss Shelbie Closs, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Reta "| Allen, treasurer; Directors - Rev. J.M. Cano, Rev. T.G. Husser, programming; Don Laporte and Mrs. D.Q. Hamilton, fund raising; Miss Muriel Holmes and Roly Sinotte, membership; Euclid Morin, director at large and T. Quinton, publicity. Mrs #D 3H. Brown, home care chairman. Charter night, under chairmanship of Rev. Husser's committee was a banquet and social evening in the Moose Hall, Terrace Bay on November 22nd with many honored guests from out of town and members from district association attending . Prior to the dinner a meeting was held in Schreiber when matters of mutual concern between district associations were discussed. Since then there have been three local meetings. Financial support to the association has been given by Kimberly Clark, Terrace Bay Apt Club, and Brownies, Holy Angels Council of the C.W.I. and all women's Church groups have become patrons, as well as four individuals. Public Hedlth Nurse, Mrs. Heather Boon, has completed the assessment in our area and reports - three school-age children and two pre-school age children. The importance of such assessments is shown by the TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 11 fact that some who had been considered possible students in a retarded class are now attending a remedial class. Since it requires five PpUpils to have classroom, and we have but three, we met with Marathon Association to discuss mutual interests since both are | part of the Lake Superior School Board district. At this meeting Roly Sinotte was nominated as representative to the board of education, along with Rev. Arthur Chabot and Rev. Dr. McNally for Marathon. The Flowers of Hope program was discussed and In Memoriam cards were placed on order to be ob- tained from Mrs. Allen in Terrace Bay and Mrs. Banning in Schreiber. There was a panel discussion and the possibility af establishing a lending library given consideration. Members were gratified to have the first showing of the film "Danny and Nicky" and deeply interested in it. Mrs. Banning thanked Rev. Husser and his committ- ee who had arranged the meeting. FEBRUARY MEETING OF THE LAKE SUPERIOR BOARD OF EDUCATION | The February meeting of the Lake Superior Board of Educatien was held in the Marathon High School on Saturday February. The Director of Education presented an address reviewing some of the problems faced by the Beard and steps already initiated to solve these and suggesting possible courses of action for the future. He felt the purpose cf our Educational System was to provide every child the opportun- ity to develop to the fullest degree his or her potential ~ to become a happy, useful person in our society, capable of intelligent honest thinking, free from prejudices and on in whom has been instilled a desire for knowledge and action for the betterment of society as a whole. Some educational progress has been made in the last year with the strengthening of the teaching staff, the introduc- tion of an opportunity class in Manitouwadge, an oral French program in Terrace Bay and Schreiber Elementary Schools, a commercial program in Marathon, and the provisie of the opportunity of the students from the Marathon area | to attend technical and occupational programs while at the same time living at home. j He filet that it is imperative that steps be taken to . identify differences and difficulties experienced by children as early as possible, to diagnose the cause of these difficulties and to prescribe effective and correct-_ ive remedial programs, The educational auténomy of each nd school must be maintained, each with its own educational -- flavour. Expenditures for January in the amount of $183,019.48 were approved.
