O Nio FEDERAL PENSION AGE DROPS TO 65 IN 1970 The eligible age for the Canada Pension Plan re- tirement pension and the Old Age Security pension will drop to 65 on January 1, 1970, completing the age-reduction program, started five years ago, when the eligible age was 70. Announcement of the reduction was made by Hon. John Munro, Minister of National Health and Welfare. The age reduction, it was estimated, will add 250,000 to the number of people eligible to receive the Old Age Security pension in 1970. It is also ex- pected, because of the age reduction and other factors, some 90,000 people will likely apply next year for retirement pensions under the Canada Pension Plan. At the end of October, more than 84,000 were receiving CPP retirement pensions. To receive a Canada Pension Plan retirement pen- sion, a person must have contributed to the plan, must have a Social Insurance number and must apply for the pension. Serving the District December 24, 1969 WHEN "THE NEWS" STARTED We are indebted to Mr. Cliff Knauff who recent- ly brought to our office copies of the first and sec- ond issues of "The Terrace Bay News". Both papers are 8 1/2" x 11" issues printed on a ditto machine and both bear the proud boast "Largest Circulation in Terrace Bay". A search of the two issues fails to reveal a date but references in various articles lead us to believe it was late November or early December 1946. We take the liberty of reprinting news items from both issues . Issue No. 1 - "GREETINGS" - "Hello men of Terrace Bay and all points North, South, East and West, lets go to press. This is the first attempt at a Terrace Bay paper. We know it won't be the last. This paper is published for you, but in order that we may reach the.goal we have set for our- selves, we must have support - your support. It is our hope to cover everything of interest to you, going on in Camp. It will be a medium through which you can keep up to date on coming events, as well as learn a little bit about what the other fellows are doing. You will readily realize that to handle this undertaking adequately, a large Staff will be necessary. Therefore, next Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the Recreation Centre a meeting will be held for all those inter- ested in reporting. It is to be hoped that we can find one man in each bunkhouse at least. With this many, a coverage of humorous and personal events taking place in each hut can be obtained. So come on fellows, give us your support to put your paper over the top. See you next Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Rec Hall." "HOCKEY! HUBBA! HUBBA!" = Hello, hockey fa fans _cont'd page 2 ..
