JULY 9,1969 1 SCHREIBER FORMER SCHOOL BOARD HONORS H .M. ERMEL The former public school board were hosts for din- ner enjoyed by 31 in the United Church hall with the school staff and their husbands, R.R. Steele District Superintendant, Dept. of Education, Port Arthur; J.S. Lowcock, Area Superviser, Dept. of Education Port Arthur; and E.J. Morgan, Director of Education Lake Superior Divisional Board of Education and W.S. Harris, former school board secretary as the guests. Chairman of the board, and M.C .,.W.G. Furlonger thanked the staff for their co-operation and wished retiring principal, H.M. Ermel enjoyment in his leisure years. Mr. Furlonger read a letter from W.D. A. McCuaig, a former pupil of Mr. Ermel's now with the Dept. of Education in Toronto, wishing him well, saying it was Mr. Ermel's teaching and good example which influenced him and many others in choosing teaching as a career. Mr. Morgan thanked the board-for their assistance in carrying on as a committee during the past months, and their advice, which helped facilitate transition. to the new regional board. Mr. Steele and Mr. Lowcock both spoke briefly, regretting their inability to attend the public recep- tion in Mr. Ermel's honor. Mr. Lowcock said Mr. Ermel's contribution in serivce must be close toa record in Ontario and it is doubtful if it will be -- equalled in the future. Mr. Steele recalled. his first meeting with Mr. : Ermel, when he arrived, fresh out of Teacher's _ College, for his first day of teaching in a Port Arthur School . Farewell gifts were presented to Mr. Ermel by Mrs. Michael Reid and Miss Linda Gibson on behalf of the school staff. The pupils of grade 8, Mr. Ermel's class, arranged a party in his honor in the school, the room profusely decorated, his desk outlined with flowers and centred with a special cake, and even a crown for him to wear as the many gifts were presented. The door prize, a pair ° of pillow slips was won by Mr. Florence Fisher.
