COUNCIL QUOTES Acting Reeve Jack Caccamo chaired the regular meeting of Terrace Bay Town Council in the absence of Reeve Cavanaugh, whe was ill. Minutes were a- dopted as read. Correspondence included a letter from the Board of Management, District Home for the Aged, submitting a Budget Schedule, and requesting that 50% of the levy be paid by March 1. Council took exception to the fact that $4000. had been included in the over- all budget for additional homes in other municipal- ities. A letter will be written to the Board of Man- agement, advising t hat this Township does not feel they are committed to more than one home, as stated in the Provincial Statutes . A letter from the Boy Scouts of Canada, Terrace Bay, requested clarification on whether or not they could allow other groups to use their Scout Hut, and still remain tax free. The Assessment Act siates that the exemption applies only if the Hut is used solely by Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. The Terrace Bay Horticultural Society requested permission to meet with Council. The Canadian Cancer Society advised Council that the Cancer Campaign will take place in April. Membership was paid to the North West Water and Waste Association in the amount of $5.00. Thunder Bay District Municipal League asked if Terrace Bay Council would co-sponsor a luncheon preceding the meeting in Port Arthur council cham- bers, March 27 - 28. Affirmative. Kimberly-Clark Pulp and Paper Company Limited PROPERTY TAX REBATE AMENDMENTS (Toronto)- Ontario's system of property tax reduc- tion for home-owners and tenants wilt continue in 1969 with few changes, Municipal Affairs Minister Darcy McKeough announced. He proposed two main amendments: 1. The reduction will amount to no more than 50 percent of the local taxes on each eligible property. 2. Crown-owned properties, both Federal and Provincial, are confirmed as being eligible for tax reduction to tenants. Mr .McKeough said the system had proved in practice to be "the best available method" of re- lieving the pressure of local taxation on the indi- vidual household. It provided more than $100 million last year to some two million households . He described the system as a practical short-run measure that will likely be replaced at some time in the future by the inclusion of property tax relief in a Provincial income tax system.
