FORESTS IN LONGLAC AREA TO BE SPRAYED The Ontario Department of Lands and Forests Office in Geraldton report that application of herbicides in forestry is fairly new in Ontario. They are used mostly for site preparation or coni- fer release. Areas scheduled for a preplanting spray usually have no conifers to be injured by the herbicide, th erefore the spraying can be done at the ideal time when the leaf is fully de- veloped. With the use of the right herbicide this is a safe operation. The job can be handled from the ground with hand or power equipment, or from aircraft. Large areas are usually sprayed from the air. Because of lower operating costs a fixed wing aircraft is preferable to helicopters. A thow thousand acre area has been selected for an aerial spray this year on Kimberly-Clark Pulp and Paper Company licence in the Geraldton District. The herbicides 2, 4-D and 2,4,5-T will be used in order to kill various species of brush prior to planting. The combination of these two chemicals has the ability to kill a greater -wariety of weeds and brush than either chemical alone. The concern for wildlife is a usual public re- action when the, news of aerial spraying is released Numerous experiments prove that herbicides 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T are not toxic to the animals. In many instances, the herbicides are used to improve wildlife habitat. You're getting old when the girl you smile at thinks you're one of her father's friends. BUY AND USE EASTER SEALS Camping is a way of life for hundreds of crippled children in Ontario - and a successful Easter Seal Campaign makes these camping experiences possible. The Ontario Society for Crippled Children and the service clubs in 230 communities in Ontario that conduct the Easter Seal campaign, have been making one of their special projects the provision of a sum- mer vacation for needy crippled children who, under normal circumstances, would not be able to get away from their homes. There are five specially designed and operated summer camps for these children that accommodate more than 1,200 boys and girls from ail over Ontario for a two or three week vacation. At camp these children live in a relaxed atmosphere away from the restrictions of the treatment centre or hospital routine. The children compete in games and activities, but rather than against each other, . against their own handicap. They find motivation te do for themselves those things which they had not thought possible. For instance, many children learn | to swim for the first time and, as a matter of fact, every summer some of these children pass their junior. and intermediate swimming tests. Perhaps the most important part of their unforget- table days at camp--even more beneficial than the thereipeutic value, fresh air and sunshine--is the" boost given to their morale. This summer, when most of us will be planning our trips to the cottage, camping expeditions, travel ling or some other wonderful summer vacation, there will be many crippled children who will be having an equally good time, because people have contributed to the Easter Seal campaign. This is just one of the ways in which Easter Seal funds help crippled child- ren. . Give the local Easter Seal Campaign the support it deserves--donate generously and don't delay.
