ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE REPORT Period from August 25th to 31st, 1968 During the past week the Schreiber Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police investigated four motor vehicle accidents which resulted in approximat ely $800 property damage. No injuries were report- ed. - One motorist struct Costa's Foodateria, at Schrei- ber, causing approximately $15.00 property damage and $150.00 to his car. Constable J.E. Wills locat- ed the subject and charged him with failing to report 'the accident. From August 25th to 31st, members of this Detach- ment, patrolled 2,830 miles of highways and logged 232 working hours . _ There were 9 persons charged under the Highway Traffic Act; 30 warned and 68 vehicles given safety checks. Four persons were charged under the Liquor Control Act. There was one break and enter reported, with nothing stolen. There were four reports of thefts, which presently are under investigation. There were also 3 domestic complaints investigated. Deaths, injuries and accidents in Canada for the 1958-1967 decade show a gradual upward trend with a slight dip in 1965. During this period there were 3,262,392 motor vehicle accidents; 41,304 persons killed as a result of these uccidents and 1,206,785 persons injured. GOVERNMENT TO PAY HALF COS The Federal government is paying half the cost of converting coin-operated vending machines from silver to the new nicket coinage (quarters and dimes) There are 500,000 machines to be converted at $16 each across Canada, so Ottawa's share will be about $4 million. The problem arose when the federal government announced the switch from a silver- copper alloy to all-nickel coins. The switch to all- nickel coins means an increased seigniorage revenue for the Royal Canadian Mint because it costs less to TERRACE BAY NEWS SEPTEMBER 5, 1968 manufacture the new coins but the selling price to banks and other outlets stays at the same face value. This added income will be used to pay the govern- ment's share of converting the machines. Makers of the new coin selection mechanisims enclose forms on which owners apply for the 50 percent rebate.
