Page 14 SCHREIBER COUNCIL QUOTES Municipal Council held a special meeting to open tenders for a new snow plow and pass a By-Law ap- pointing Edmund Borustki road superintendent. The contract for the plow was awarded to Spadoni Bros. the lowest tender. Other tenders were from Lake- head Motors, S.J.Hill & Sons Ltd. and Gibson Motors. ' At the May meeting of Council Reeve Harness re- ported on meeting with representatives of Northern Ontario Gas Co.to discuss the natural gas situation and was advised to let Schreiber's présent contract stand for the time being until a plan is presented to the Federal Government and their decision made. The rink ice plant has been shut down but as yet no agent from Creamery Packaging Mfg. Co. has come to drain the system. Council favored Reeve Cavanaugh's s uggestion that Terrace Bay, Schreiber and other neighboring communities have regional meetings to discuss pro- blems and consider suggestions which might benefit all. Mr.Cavanaugh thought a small meeting might be held first to make arrangements, to be followed by full representation of council at another meet- ing. Permission was granted the Navy League of Can- ada, Terrace Bay Branch, to hold a tag day in Schreiber. A budget estimate for district assessor system and equalization factors was received from R.M. Veitch Regional Assessment Supervisor . District Health Unit Peter Hoban reported on in- spection of eating and L.C.B.O. establishments with only one requiring notice to improve certain conditions. He also made definite suggestions re- garding facilities in the rink. The Hon.J.W.Spooner, minister of Municipal Affairs sent word of a plan to relive elderly tax payers of some of their tax burden. This will be followed up by Council. Dr.B.A.MzDonald requested new floor covering in his office in Town Hall. The matter was turned over to the Hall Committee. Mayor E.H.Reed of Fort William wrote commend- ing Schreiber and Coach Jack Copeman, on the behaviour of Schreiber PeeWee hockey team which took part in the Elks International Hockey Tourna- ment. A proposal from Western Iron & Steel Scrap Co. was considered. This will be exam ined. _ Water accounts of $19.05 and general accounts of $2,323.83 were passed for payment. One resident was warned to clean up his property. Councillor McParland reported on his meeting with Port Arthur and District Health Unit. After considering the problem it was agreed to in- stal a covered ditch, running along Brunswick St. to the Subway at an approximate cost of $2,000, in an attemp to drain water which causes flooding on Co- lumbia St. Mrs.Inez McCuaig reported on activities planned during Schreiber's re-union. Council plans small souvenirs for returning Schreiber people and tenta- tively agreed to take part in the July Ist parade. Jack Gordon was hired as apprentice assessor and assistant clerk-treasurer. An application for lease of 75 ft. of the former YMCA site was sent to the CPR. In view of the large amount of outstanding back taxes it was decided to take immediate action to recover these. A motion commending Constable Keith Scott's ac- tion in recent police case was passed.
