The major- ity, he said, had fallen by the wayside, thrust too soon into the commercial world without the valuable and necessary training so essential for life in this competitive world. A few had gone to private schools and other High Schools, from which he hoped they would graduate with honour . He asked, as all educators and parents must ask, who is to blame for the high drop out rate? Everyone students included, must take a share of the blame he claimed--no one entirely exempt. Now was the time, Mr.Rowsom continued, for all of us to look to the future when it is to be earnestly hoped that not 20% but 90% of the Grade 12 students finish the course. The Principal apologized for his depression on such an important occasion, but the fate of the school was in the balance, along with the eventuality that the the responsibility of the secondary education of our, boys and girls might be taken from the hands of the representative school board. He then introduced in turn, Councillor R.Sinotte, representing Reeve Adamo, and the guest speaker, Mayor E.H.Reed of Fort William. Mayor Reed took as the theme of his address, the Importance and Responsibility of being a Good Citi- zen. After his address the activity and athletic awards were made by members of the high school board, assisted by Mr.J.Ferguson. Curling Bars were presented by Mrs.F «Cruickshank to Sheila Chard, Gary Gusul, Ray Olsen and Cathy- Joe Cotton and Basketball awards to Jill Crandlemire, Diane Campbell, Valerie Turner, Linda Dakin, Judy McInnes, Susan Sadowick, Lita Marie Boudreau, Lynn Simmer, Gail Dakin, Claire Belliveau, Mar- garet Jean Wallwin and Kristine Olsen. Mr. W.Farrell presented Basketball Bars to Jim Mikus, Bruce Lundberg, Bob Wallwin, Jack Crandle- mire, Michael Mallais, Ken Wood, Ron Falzetta and Bob Robinson; Badminton Bars to Reid Boutelier, George Dashkewytch, Lynn Simmer, Susan Graham, Paul Papousek and Margaret J.Wallwin; Cheerleader Bars to Cheryl Duncan, Mary Clare Coupal, Mary Ellen Little, Elizabeth Hayes, Marcia Hamilton, Verna Daley and Norma Chesley; Gymnastic Bars to Claire Belliveau, Norma Chesley, Cheryl Duncan, Joe Papineau, Bob Broadhurst, Graham Coe, Wes Hiebert and Michael Chepelsky. House League Bars bars were presented to the teams captained by Jil Crandlemire and Ken Wood by Mr. C.Linton. A piano solo, played by Joane Brown, preceded the presentation of the Individual Awards made by Mr. A.N.Chisholm to Diane Campbell and Jim Mikus, who received school crests for their partici- pation at the Ontario Athletic Leadership Camp and the Athlete of the Year Trophy to Jill Cr andlemire and Ken Wood. This was followed by a vocal solo, by Jane Persson, accompanied by Linda Hayes. Mr. D.Briscoe, principal of the Public School presented Activity Bars to Lita Marie Boudreau, Suzanne Lemay, Wayne Daley, Claire Belliveau, Howard Wood and Karen Lundberg (Drama) and to Joanne Brown, Jill Crandlemire, Kathy Phillips, Jane Kelty and Pat Simmer (Entertainment). The principal of St.Martin's School, Mr. R.T.Kenney, presented Glee Club Bars to Lita M. Boudreau Joanne Brown, Carole Gaudet, Karin Lundberg Lynn Simmer jf, Claire and Sharon Belliveau, Suzanne Lemay, Sharon} St.Louis, Judy McInnes and Kristine Olsen. Perfect Attendance Bars were given to Susan Gra- ham, Jane West,Elaine Shynkary k, Claire Belliveau Tom Knight, Lynn Simmer and Kay Olsen. Public Speaking Bars were awarded to Lois Ann Fraser, George Dashkewytch, Deborah Stewart and Keith Koski and Library Bars went to Lita M.Boudreau, Karin Lundberg and Suzanne Lemay .Deborah Stewart, received the Canadian Centennial Youth Excharge Crest from Rev.T.G.Husser who also (Continued P.8)
