The bidding shows good sense by the North- South pair as it was using mini- mum responses to show 12 to 16 point hands. North opens his four-card minor, South responds his good heart suit. At this point many players in North would jump immediately to game or would jump to three hearts with 15 points. But both of these bids are clearly incorrect for 15 points is still a minimum hand. If South only had six points and a five-card heart suit, he would still respond one heart to one diamond. A jump response would encourage slam and would convey false information about the hand. The simple raise of the heart suit is excel- lent, for South can say to him- self, '"my partner has from 13 to 16 -points and at least three hearts.'"'" This information is vital for South counts a makxi- mum 16 and his own 14 points, rules out slam and bids the game. An interesting sidelight to the hand is the fact that 3NT can be made but only realizes 630 points whereas Four Hearts makes five and a score of 650. welcomed the delegates from visiting Leagues before turning the meeting over to Diocesan president, Mrs. M.Helmink. who previewed the highlights of the National and Provincial conventions. Diocesan Director, Fa ther Cary, gave a very interesting talk and Father Gallagher spoke briefly on 'Our Indians' The latter topic will be the theme of the Diocesan Convention which will also be held in Terrace Bay next May. A delicious lunch was served by Mrs. Glenna MacDonald and her committee. Municipal Roads Supt., Jack Wellings made his report on the past few months' work around town. All work budgeted for has been completed except gravelling Lakeview Drive. His suggestion on this item was not to do part of a job but to budget for complete resurfacing in the near future. General maintenance has been carried out--all cracks filled and manholes made level with road surfaces. The financial aspect for the remainder of the year is excellent. There is sufficien money available to finance all snow re- moval operations until January, 1967. Councillor Desrosier thanked Mr .Wel- lings for his report and the meeting pro- ceeded. Fire and police report were read, the latter noting two fires in September-- one a car which burnt beside the high- way and the other in the disused cement block works. Cause of both fires is still undetermined. A report from two volun- teer firemen who attended fire training courses included a recommendation that the present rate of compensation be in- creased to meet existing wage levels.
